Buying a Video Card (Help Please)

August 6th, 2016

Hi everyone. This is my first time buying a new video card so please help me I’m looking for an AGP, around 256MB video card so that I can run my new 22″ monitor in 1680×1050. I don’t do much gaming, though I might do a little once I get the new video card.
Right now I’m using a VGA connector to go to my computer, should I upgrade to DVI? Are there any noticeable differences? This is the card I’m looking at right now, mainly because of the price. Is it a good one? Also, it says the max resolution it supports is “2048 x 1536 x 32bit x 85 Hz Max Analog”
“1600 x 1200 Max Digital” (see second link below for more info)
I’m assuming this means I won’t be able to run 1680×1050 with a DVI connector, but I will be able to with the VGA connector, correct?
Overall, is this a good video card to buy, if not, do you have any other suggestions?

What is your budget?

for under $40 that’s an ok card (eVGA GeForce 6200 256MB AGP 256A8N341LX) for desktop stuff but the gaming @1680×1050 will suck
either connector should do 1680×1050 is $40 the most you can afford ?
Answer #5
I can afford probably upto $60-70, but I also need to buy speakers ($35-45) and a TV Tuner card (probably $50-60). My budget isn’t unlimited – I need the best value.
Also, I rarely game, but I might start playing Wolfenstein: ET again… or maybe Warrock, but those games worked pretty well on my old Dell integrated graphics chip (64 mb). As for the resolution, I can switch it when I want to play games. I mainly do desktop work, coding, homework, and movie watching on this computer.

Too expensive, plus I really don’t need 512 mb.. 256 should do the trick
Thanks a ton so far!

if you can afford something like 80 Dollars get Nvidia GeForce 7300,good for low budgets and runs very good.

But is it needed? Like I said, I need to save money as much as possible and I don’t game much. Also, is the one I picked out good quality?
Answer #8
I think you would be better off with a 6600
you will probably get better game performance with a high 6 series than a lower 7 series, for less money
see this chart near the bottom

Answer #9
the one suggested is an excellent one, i used to use it on my old computer
Answer #10
That chart is pretty helpful, thanks. the 6600 is 128mb, while 6200 (the one I’m looking at) is 256mb, yet the one you mention is scoring much higher on the charts. Are there any benefits of going for the 256mb one, even though it’s scoring lower?

Due to suggestions, I’m now looking at buying this one:

It’s only $5 than more than the previous one, is this one any good?
Thanks a ton for all the info so far, hopefully someday I’ll be able to repay this knowledge to others who are as utterly confused as myself.
Answer #12
more memory duz not improve performance it only increases the resolutions available
if you do a lil digging you might find a 6600 with the 256mb of memory here’s 1
PNY (VCG66256AWB) (256 MB) AGP Graphic Card
but in most case you are better off with a faster GPU than more memory
