bootmgr is missing (Windows 7)

February 2nd, 2020

So I was doing my system restore on my 3 year old desktop when my power goes out in the middle of the first step which is I remember “Reformating Hard Drive” or something like that, so as you guess by the title now I am trying to boot up my desktop it says Bootmrg is missing” well now since its 3 years old, I seem to misplace my CD/DVD of Windows 7 , I understand I need windows 7 DVD CD to replace the missing file, was wondering tho do I need to download and burn a CD from here? the ones the users offer to download or is there any other way? Will I need to activate it again? I dont have the serial code of windows 7 and in my computer its the serial code of Windows Vista as I got windows 7 as a free upgrade.Dam I should of have taken a picture of it as before this happening I was looking at it, I hate not listening to my gut, it has happened a lot.
Also would I need to boot a windows vista iso or a windows 7?

Answer #1
well you could download an iso from here http://www.google.com?t=18468904&highlight=
and then search for windows 7 activator in the search tab
Answer #2
Nice I am currently downloading one and by that thread it looks like I am downloading the right one. But will this help me restore my windows and make it bootable? I dont understand the part of the drivers will I need to download them,?

Try to find a copy of the Windows 7 version you were using that says OEM and lists your brand of computer and burn to a disc (you could use a flash drive if you’re familiar with the process). If you’re lucky, the windows activation is built into the computers bios and will activate itself. I know this works because I have an HP computer that came with Vista and had a free 7 upgrade. When you boot from the disc select the repair mode and select the bootmgr repair or rebuild option. You might have to do this a few times if bootmgr was not the only thing that was damaged. Or, you could do a new install if you don’t have a lot of files you want to save. Hope this helps.

I’ve had 3 power cut-off few hours ago during a format on a clients computer, was so frustrating.
First of all, you might try to the ‘Bootmgr is missing’ error, with a possibly bootable USB/CD-DVD. Personally I use Hiren’s Boot CD.
List of programs here:
http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd
Download link here:
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hirens.BootCD.15.2.zip
You get to have either useful programs if you are on Windows XP, or else you can just boot to Dos environment, or Mini Windows XP (With auto-install-support to every driver) BUT remember this is BOOT-ONLY, you can’t install or have this live.
If you don’t have the problem fixed I would suggest you an Pre-activated Windows 7 Edition.
You can find one here: http://www.google.com?t=16896189&highlight=
Else you could just get one via torrent, since it’s not as annoying as downloading files divided and extracting them.
About your last question; Windows 7 ofcourse. Vista was the starting OS, however Windows 7 came in upgrading it, means your computer had Windows 7, and that is what you must re-install (Unless you wish to try out Windows 8, but Vista no way! The worst OS ever.)
Feel free to ask anything you need!

Wow that is a lot of information, I am currently trying in getting a fresh copy of Windows 7, its taking a long time to download and its almost done (25 minutes left) so I felt I should try that since I already wasted my time. I personally backed up some files I wanted to save so restarting from the factory settings is alright, will the fresh copy of windows have my drivers etc? Thank you I appreciate it. Also Thank you , that was a lot of information and I appreciate it. I was too reading about Hiren but I didn’t really understood it, does this fix the bootmgr without reinstalling the whole windows 7 OS?

Since the power went off after you did start the whole procedure, we are not sure if there is any damage done to the OS Files (Windows drivers etc.) So, according the message yes, you might be able to fix it with just trying to fix your Bootmgr.
You can give it a shot, once you are done with the Windows you are downloading, burn them into a DVD, launch your computer and boot into the DVD you just burned, but do not follow the normal installation, instead once you just boot into it and you are on this screen:

(Can’t use image tag because it would be hot-linking)
Follow this very easy guide here:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/104341-bootmgr-missing-fix.html
If you can’t get it done with this, just keep up the installation normally, keep in mind; If you do NOT format the hard drive but just click on it and press continue, you get the ability to save your old files and have them moved to a folder named Windows.old.

ah sucks, I followed this post
http://www.google.com?p=77235113#77235113
and downloaded windows 7 ultimate because I was frustrated and not thinking right , it won’t work right?
Answer #9
It will, Ultimate is the best version of Windows 7, do not worry. Plus every installation for any Windows 7 is the same process on all versions except for the outcome uses.
So get your head up, burn the CD, boot, press the Repair my computer > Command prompt and follow the easy guide I linked you earlier!

Ok I burned the ISO and I am in the System recovery options, it says operating system: unknown on Unknown Local disk, is this bad? also it wont repair via Startup repair it says Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.
Answer #11
Sadly, windows files are harmed, you may try to format and hopefully you will be able to keep/save your old files!
For the drivers; Download this:

Trusted, no ads in program, direct download of any driver needed.

So I suppose ill use the windows 7 ultimate Ive downloaded to install a new OS, but I have 2 hard drives, once is HP and says Type is system, another one is Factory_Image ad it says Type Primary, suppose I install it in the second one?
Answer #13
The factory image is the original backup installed by the manufacturer. It saves them money by not having to provide you with physical backup discs. You want to install on the other one. The one that says system. And HP has a system update utility that will install all bios updates and drivers at one shot. You could reformat the whole drive and use the space used by the backup if you don’t think you will ever use it.
Answer #14
First thing you should do is backup your data onto an external HDD!
This can be done with MiniXP (Included on Hiren’s boot cd):
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/
So I suppose ill use the windows 7 ultimate Ive downloaded to install a new OS
That’s certainly one option, But not the only!
You still got two more:
1. Repair the MBR:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20864-mbr-restore-windows-7-master-boot-record.html
With this option, Odds are that no reinstall would be required!
2. Use the recovery partition, This can usually be done by pressing F11 or CTRL+F11 during boot up (But do refer to the on-screen text for more accurate information)
but I have 2 hard drives, once is HP and says Type is system
No, You have 2 partitions! and the 2nd one is used by the recovery partition.
suppose I install it in the second one?
If going for a fresh reinstall, You’d be best deleting both partitions and re-partition em.
Give the first one 60GB and the rest to the 2nd, Make em both Primary & NTFS.
Windows setup has a built-in partition manager (Just click on the advance button when it asks
you where to install it to) Another option is to use a 3rd party bootable partition manager (Such as gparted)
Answer #15
Well I really don’t care for the files I could download programs again but care more for the drivers. I will see if I am able to boot this version first lol I picked the first hard drive.
Answer #16
You could use the recovery partition as said but you would be reinstalling Vista and then would have to upgrade to 7.
Answer #17
Wish I could have seen it first since i have already installed windows 7 ultimate and Im changing the time atm, now its finalizing your settings, as I type this its preparing my desktop.
Answer #18

Just download em from HP’s website for your specific computer model!
