not sure what is the newest custom firmware for PS3 but if you hack it , you will not be able to play games online.

if ps3 is jailbroken you can’t play ANY games online

As the above posters have allready said, you cannot play jailbroken (hacked) PS3s online at the moment.
The last time this were possible were 1-2 years ago.
But if you dont use the online service (PSN) I’d recommend the blue dongle, or just get a guide off the internet and do it yourself.

You can also keep an eye out on ps3news.com for updates on if\when they are breaking the code for a new jailbreak.
Currently Its the 3.55 Firmware that are running on jailbroken PS3s, and thats pretty old.
I recently updated my PS3 from Custom Firmware (CFW \ Jailbroken) to OFW (Original Firmware \ Non-Jailbroken) to play Uncharted 3 Online.
And I will most likely stay there.

Allmost all the games that have been recently released does work, but still.. No PSN (Online) whatsoever.
Assassins Creed Revelations, FEAR3, Lord of the Rings; War in the North, LA Noire are working on CFW 3.55
