Avi index repair

I’ve got some windows Xp made Avi’s. When I try to play them now with vlc I get the error that the avi index is broken and I need to repair this.
Whats a good program to do this? Because VLC stays forever on 49%.
Things like divx repair and such work for me on most avi files.
They often won’t repair damage but will allow the file to play, with glitches, past the damaged point.

VirtualDub has an index repair function
In virtualdub’s file open dialog box,check the extended options box while loading file, in the extended options dialog box-select rederive keyframe flags
will take a while
the save it under a new name using “direct stream copy” for both audio & video
