I’ve Samsung Galaxy Ace, do I need to root the phone before I can install custom roms?

From what I remember, all you need to do is flash ClockworkMod (CWM) on to the device using ODIN and then do a firmware update using CWM.

The simple answer is..No you don’t..Rooting have nothing to do with flashing roms..

Rooting gives you the advantage to modify at a system level, for example, removing a system app and replacing it with another or blocking ads by modifying the hosts file and so on an so forth.

I tried to install custom rom using Rom Manager but I want to backup my current rom so I’ll need Flash ClockworkMod Recovery but when it asks for my phone model, my phone model isn’t in the option

Some phones are just not supported by Rom Manager..
Not sure if this is the method for your phone..Put your phone in recovery mode,,Connect the usb to your PC and run Odin..

Rooting almost gives you every advantage you would ever want in your phone. It will run soo much faster and access to soo many additional
features.
