Alternative to Auto CAD ?

Hello friends,
I like to know is there is any alternative Software available for AutoCAD. It would be great if a newbie can work well with a similar program that you are going to recommend.

google sketchup has an export to dwg function.

What do you mean by Alternative software for AutoCAD?
Another great CAD program that i like better is Inventor 2008 or 2009. Its still made by Autodesk but its different.

Solid Works is pretty good. We use it inschool instead of Auto CAD. Good program, easy to get into after you do the help tutorials. lets you 3d make, and color in any type of material (wood, plastic, metal) can add shine to the piece to make it look more realistic. Really good program all around.

Well beside AutoCad,i some time use Microsoft Visio.

ProDesktop was the main program used when I was doing A Level Design & Technology.
