[SOLVED]Need Help Connecting Z-5500 Speakers to an Xbox 360

November 5th, 2013

hey there guys, as the topic says… i want to be able to connect my Z-5500 Speakers to my xbox 360. i’ve been looking around on google and can’t seem to get a straight answer -.-
Currently i have my xbox connected to a 42″ LCD tv via HDMI, so i was wondering… would connecting an optical audio cable directly to the back of the 360 work? or would the sound still come out of the tv?

Answer #1
Does your TV not have an audio out?
Answer #2
well i suppose it would, but, i have my TV mounted on a wall, so its a pain to constantly take it down to get to the back of it. my actual idea is… when playing the xbox, i’d like to be able to constantly switch between having the audio come out of the tv when i use the speakers on my computer, or use my speakers for the xbox when not using the computer.
Answer #3
Not exactly too sure what you are doing, but the Z5500 has optical & coax in, and 3.5mm stereo input sockets (I have a set of these) but I don’t know what connections are on an Xbox or your TV.
Answer #4
well i’m hoping i don’t have to mess with my tv, since its mounted to a wall, but the xbox has an optical audio port on the back of it
Answer #5
I can think of a rather awkward but working way.
Xbox 360 VGA cable with RCA stereo to 3.5mm connector or cable.
You miss out surround sound.

If it’s optical out on the TV, just connect that to the optical in on the z5500 controller – you only need to do it once and leave it in situ.
You can do optical connection from the Xbox to the z5500. (Just choose Digital input on the z5500 controller)

well, my main reasoning is, i got a mate who doesn’t have internet at home, and sometimes comes over to play halo or gears online. i was just thinking, instead of playing splitscreen, he could use one of my 27″ samsung monitors and hook up his xbox via hdmi. but since the monitor doesn’t have speakers, i was gonna use my z5500. then every now and again, like during the day or something, i hook up the speakers to my own xbox instead of using the tv speakers. that was original purpose.

It would appear that if you have a component adapter for you 360, then that has an optical connector, so you could run an optical cable from that to your speakers..

pretty sure thats talking about the old xbox 360’s that didn’t have the optical port on the back. i failed to mention that i have the xbox 360 slim, which indeed has the optical out port on the back =\

thanks for the help guys. so now i end up finding the info i need on the support xbox website -.- essentially… i’m able to do it how i thought… basically…..
 Xbox 360 S console
1. Leave the HDMI cable connected to your TV for video.
2. Connect one end of the digital audio cable to the S/PDIF (optical audio) port on the console.
3. Connect the other end of the digital audio cable to the digital audio input on your receiver.
so now, all i need to do is get the optical output cable… one more thing before i change this to solved… i’m kind of an idiot… would the cable i need be male to male or male to female? … if theres even such thing as the latter…. cause i found this one on ebay
