Geforce 8600 GTS 512 Running Hot
January 21st, 2020
Core Clock 574 Shader Clock 1233
Memory Clock 908
I also set the fan to 100% on the video card. I got these values from another person who has the same card and says thats what it runs nicely at. The card now runs at 68 celcius. 61-62 if I take the side of the case off. I used RivaTuner to accelerate the fan and underclock it. Do any techies out there know of any way I can cool this damn card?
Try RivaTuner, Search google…
Use the NVIDIA Control panel.
They have a built-in over clocking tool similar to Rivatuners.
Also make sure you aren’t blasting the heat and try to open a window.
i got a oc’d 8600 and it runs fine could it be a faulty card?
also what type of fan does it have on it a 8800style ? or juss a big fan ontop of a heatsink ?
also wat surrounds the card is there anything close to it ?
All cards are different. Don’t expect someone’s OC to work with yours as well. There are duds. That said, you can change your video card’s cooling, which will decrease your temp for sure. Video cards can run very hot, I do not believe that they are in danger of damage until they reach the high 70s or 80s. So don’t worry about it.
Look up a program called “Powerstrip” < I used it for awhile with my 7600GS to OC and it worked great.
I underclocked it to the following settings
why they would not have let it go to stores if it has not been tested.
80’s is not out of the range of an nvidia card at load. Your idle seems a bit high though for such low clocks.
For your card your clock, shader, and memory are acceptable, as the xfx xxx 8600gts is set at 730/1566/1130.
Either your heatsink/fan is not mounted properly on your card or perhaps you are overvolting the pci-express in the bios?
Kind of sounds like an RMA to me to be so hot at such low performance levels. Too bad you didn’t get the msi one with the custom cooler – I have one at it works cool and quietly overclocked.
actually from what I’ve seen those temps are not all that bad
I have a 7600GS with static cooling(no fan, just a humongous heat sink, that runs @ 85 or so under a load)
I set a case fan pointed directly @ it and now it runs low 60’s under a load
google “slot cooler” get one and install it in the slot rt next to the card
be sure the side opening is pointed toward the card

I’m with him.. I run the same card with a big heat sync slapped on her.. Isn’t quite a card that I love.. My temp sits in low 60’s too with an open case and a drafty basement..
i have a similar problem
i have a geforce 8600m GT on a forcebook diablo laptop
and when i play some new games, it overheats and the laptop automaticaly shuts down. for instance, company of heroes, after 20-30 minutes of playing, it shuts down.
i recently instaled new drivers, but i dont see any progress..
can anyone help, tell me how to manually control the fan speed or something, maybe new drivers, anything, im not very experienced in dealing with these things
