So do you mean a forum or IRC chatroom?
or do you mean like facebook and myspace? if it gets to be a big hit you could make lots of money selling ppl information… arent domains names around 9 bucks a year? check out yahoo.com they sell domain names for just 9 bucks a year. i dunno how much extra for server space.

lol, haha NICE ONE!….. are you serious?? Then to gain the smallest bit of competenece you’ll need at team of 50 high-skilled people, a budget of a about 5m GBP (10m USD) and expect to have no free time for at least 10 years. That’s if you’re lucky.

Yup you are right, it takes alot of time, money and other resources to get a good social networking site. Currently I am working at an internet company that will launch a news site. They have a team of 10 programmers only to code the website and 3 designers. These people are already busy for a year full time, and i still didn’t mention the other departments like marketing and editing.
I advice you, to
1) first of all estimate the scale of your project.
2) Look at your financial ressources
3) Work out a business plan and find some good sponsors
If you are planning on starting this site as a hobby, with low financial input, then i advice you try to use some free tools.
There are some CMS that provide you possibilities to build a semi social networking site. Look at the website of joomla or drupal. They certainly have some plugins that can provide your site with alot of user generated content.

btw checkout LIFERAY.
A lot of sites have tried to do the same as myspace and facebook and have failed. I hope you have a lot of money to get this going or have the sponsors that will assist in the costs at least. Like said if you are going low financial input then look for the free or low cost CMS programs. I didn’t like Joomla because of the way you have to bridge your forums to your main page. I currently have 2 pages running Nuke-Evolution using godaddy’s hosting and the forums are phpbb like here and easy to maintain. But the way ahead for evolution is still unknown and kind of going a different direction now. But you can have a CMS running and setup in about an hour or less depending on your connection.
Goodluck.
