help im someone how using space but theres nothing there

i have this back up drive when i go to its properties
it says that 1.2gb is used when i open it and selected everything in it its only 178 mb

and i can see the hidden files

Get Tune-up utilities, and there are many features in it, one of which is “Free up disk space”
It helps you to choose what to remove and what not, it shows temp files + restore points and etc.

Mate this is common. I doubt its restore points but if you want to clean them up try this 1.Right click on the drive letter and select “Properties” 2.From there select the “Tools” tab. There are clean up options in there.
As you said its a backup drive you are best to do this. 1. select all folders and files on the drive and “copy” them all
DO NOT COPY SYSTEM AND HIDDEN FILES ON THAT DRIVE YOU WILL JUST BE COPYING THE PROBLEM YOU NOW HAVE!!!!!
2. create a folder on another drive (any drive C included, call the folder “backup”) 3. past the copied files into the “Backup” folder
4. format the backup drive 5. copy all files back onto the formatted drive.
There are many causes for non existent used space, could be swap files that weren’t automatically deleted, a temp folder, it could even be a recycle bin on that drive (all drives have a recycle bin, they are all hidden except for the main (“C”) drive. Dont ask me why they do this but I can tell you from experience that sometimes they contain large volumes of un-need/wanted files that you can not delete. Its a mental Microsoft thing. Go figure .. things that make you go … WTF!!!!!!!!
Do this and you will recover allot of space.

Turn off your system restore and turn it back on. That will remove all previous restore points.

Thus deleting any important restore points right click on c:/ Choose properties
In the tab “General” click “Disk Cleanup”
A dialog box will open
Click tab “More Options”
On this dialog page under the heading “System Restore and Shadow Copies” click on “Disk Cleanup”
Another dialog box will open … “Are you sure you want to delete ALL BUT THE MOST RECENT RESTORE POINT?”
Press delete.
Finished.
Mate you should save yourself the headache and disable restore on all drives and use Nortons save and restore. It works on all OS’s including Vista 64bit. I use it religiously and swear by its reliability. Its an offspring of Nortons Ghost but improved and compatible.
I still dont believe its old restore points. I would do what I said two posts ago.
