Recoving Data from a Hard Drive question

My laptop recently broke and they said the hard drive was the problem, they formatted the drive and sent me it back and fixed the fan, they have reinstalled OS X on the drive but is there a program that can get my ppictures restored that were on the drive in iphoto before the format,
what would be the best way to do this? is it even possible. Im using a macbook pro!
Thanks soooo much i really dont wanna lose these pictures, i have learnt the importance of backing up

active undelete is pretty good but after reinstall of os theres a good chance of the files being over written and thus unlikely to be recovered
