Connect 2 PC’s With CAT5+ADSL hitch
September 19th, 2013
http://helpdeskgeek.com/networking/connect-two-computers-using-a-crossover-cable/
but sad thing is get 11mb/s flat speed …. way too low than usb hdd’s
which might have been fine but while transferring files i cant access internet without wifi.
So for 12 gb have to wait 20-30 minutes lol
I have an ADSL +2 modem with these slots
2 Net
1 IPTV
1 VOIP
NO USB slot.
I was wondering if i can connect both pc’s to adsl modem in those NET slots and thereby accessing internet as well as network drives.
Is this possible?
And there is 1 more problem with current setup……win7 detect 2 networks and frequently disconnect from internet when i connect to access internet.
any solution on this too?
Any help will be much appreciated
Two things you should know:
1. 100MBPs Ethernet = 12.5 MB/s effectively,1000MBPS (AKA Gigabit,1GBPS) = 125 MB/s
2. A CAT5 cable is only capable of supporting up to 100MBPS,For 1000,A CAT5E or CAT6 cable is required.

It’s an ADSL router/modem combo to be exact,Standalone external ADSL modems don’t exist,And yes it’d work,But don’t expect any
miracles,You need an ADSL router with gigabit ports & gigabit Ethernet cards on both PCs in order to get better speeds (as well as use
the proper cables^)
Edit: You could also get better speeds with wireless on both ends (Only if your router supports the N standard)
150MBPS = 18.75 MB/s ,300MBPS = 37.5 MB/s,There are two N revisions.
Of course it also depends on which standards the wireless cards on both
PCs support and the signal quality.
thank you for narrowing it down.
I have 1gbps card on desktop but 100mbps on lappy.guess that didnt help.
in present configuration can i use cat 6 to improve speed? or buy usb to lan dongle?
sorry i am not a fan of wireless.
also i read somewhere connecting through usb to usb…..could it provide more speed? got usb 3.0 on desktop.
FYI there are eSATA ports on both pc’s.
please explain how to connect them with adsl at same time accessing internet on just 1 pc?(2 will do too but not necessary)
thanks for your help so far

No,You need 1GBPS on both ends for that.
or buy usb to lan dongle?
It’d help,But not by much,USB 2.0 tops at 25-30 MB/s,So you won’t get the full blown 125 from a USB>Gigabit Ethernet adapter,You’d
be better off getting an expresscard adapter (provided the laptop has such a slot)

Yep,This is possible with a USB data link cable,These only come with USB2 support,Not that this matters as you wouldn’t
benefit from one-sided USB3 anyway.
FYI there are eSATA ports on both pc's.
These cannot be used for this purpose.

Just plug em both to the Ethernet ports on the router,Can’t be specific bout the file sharing without knowing which OS each of em runs.
Edit: You could also just use an external HDD.

windows7
You could also just use an external HDD
i am using it(320gb) but i thought this procedure will save some time and work.
btw it started making noise and they come with 1 year warranty.
?
Follow this guide:

As for the noise on the ext HDD,Any unusual noise is not a good indication,You should backup your data to be on the safe side,Also
get hard disk sentinel from the apps section and see what it says,There’s one thing I’m unsure of,Is it still under warranty?
thanks
Is it still under warranty?
no dont think so
Standalone external ADSL modems don't exist
Incorrect, they are actually pretty common. I threw 2 old USB ones (BT Voyager 105) out when clearing some space in my garage the other day. I know quite a few people who use them as they only have one wired desktop.
