How much $ do I need to build a powerful PC

December 10th, 2022

I had around $5K was planning on building a decent PC I smiling the money away in buying stupid shit. + my car had some heavy mechanical problem which took about half of that. I was planning of starting saving again. I do a lot of heavy 3d Modeling and 3d Rendering and digital design so need something powerful. About how much would I need to buy fairly decent powerful hardware and build from scratch a pc. will $4,000 -$5,000 be enough?
Answer #1
Are these American dollars?
$1500 will be more than enough.
Answer #2
Which exact 3D rendering apps are you using? Are you a gamer?

Yep:

Comcast is an American ISP.

Even less, $1500 is excessive for a single PC.
Answer #3
you call that excessive? When i build a new rig every 3-4 years, by the time i’m done i hit 2k € easily. The GTX 680 i’ve got now cost me over 600€ alone when i picked it up a few months ago. For heavy 3D use & video editing you need a powerfull system. Systems upto that job can hit the 1500+ mark with ease.
Answer #4
$1500 would be nothing but I run Solidworks and do a lot of 3d heavy mechanical design, but what I need power for is rendering it takes forever like Keyshot and Vray. I do a little bit of animation too. I am looking to build a pc that will be able to carry me on for 2-3 years without any more investment in it.
Answer #5
If you are doing really heavy duty production work you may want to look into a workstation class machine rather than a desktop pc.
For examples on build configurations:

Your right. It’s just been a while since I’ve made a build for 3D rendering and I forgot how expensive it can be.
but I run Solidworks and do a lot of 3d heavy mechanical design, but what I need power for is rendering it takes forever like Keyshot and Vray.
One question, What are the typical file sizes of your renderings?
I wasn’t able to find a decent answer on Google. I just wanna know if I should add RAID to my build or not.

Sometimes is simple stuff like a car sometimes I got to render a whole complex mechanical system like an engine animation 300-400 MB 3d max file. My current pc shuts down every time I try to render it. I will start to save up and once I got enough $$ I will ask you guys on recommendations for the hardware. Thanx all for replying much appreciated. I also use Keyshot fairly medium quality render will take my pc 15hrs lol

Dude, You need a quadro for 3ds max & solidworks!
Anyways, I made you the following build, Hope you could afford it in the near future:

Case: Corsair 300R /  $79.99

PSU: CORSAIR CX600M 600W Modular / $79.99

HDD: Seagate 2TB / $99.99

SSD: Corsair Force GS 128GB / $129.99

ODD: LG 24x DVD Burner / $17.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136259

Totals at $1647.90 (Well, $1617.90 after $30 Case/Mobo/PSU rebates)
Went with a FX 8350 due to your intended usage. The FX 8350 is better
than the 3570k when it comes to 3D Rendering/Video encoding. This build is not
made for gaming clearly (But I guess your okay with that as you’ve made no reference
to gaming, And I did ask!) Anyways, It certainly got all the goodies!
Answer #9
nice build. If that doesn’t satisfy him, then he’ll have to go for dual xeon 6-core and maybe quadro 6000 or tesla k20. :p
Answer #10
that Seagate drive has 103 bad reviews http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=22-148-834&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Keywords=%28keywords%29&Page=1 why not just get a high quality Western Digital drive?
Answer #11
LOL, WD are not as “high quality” as you’d like to believe, Their 2TB has it’s fair
share of bad reviews too:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=22-136-792&SortField=3&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Keywords=%28keywords%29&Page=1#scrollFullInfo
And you got your numbers wrong, The Seagate has 54,331 bad reviews while the WD has 497.
However, That’s only because Seagate is the more popular brand and has FAR more reviews:
Seagate 2TB total reviews: 456,528
WD 2TB total reviews: 2977
So it doesn’t really say much about WD’s reliability.
Anyways, It seems WD have increased their warranty period for the Black drives to 5yrs, Which
is a plus I guess in compare to Seagate’s 2yrs, But personally, I just don’t trust WD’s, Had too many failures.
Answer #12
I use solidworks and autocad both at home and at work. Solidworks will run smoothly on a system you can purchase for 650. Admittedly the analyzing safety factors etc. will take longer, but I really see no need to spend such excessive amounts. I know you want to be future proof and I understand that.
The thing I will suggest is get a graphics card like this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133353
It’s designed specifically for workstation PCs, if you want to spend more look at the quadro 4000 like suggested.
Oh and get 32GB of ram as I’ve found that more ram definitely makes a difference in solidworks (and well you have the budget for it).
Perhaps consider getting a 240GB SSD like this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167086
At least you will have plenty of space for your OS, programs and designs.
Answer #13
Roberto’s build looks good, only change I would make is 2 Samsung 840 Pro Series in RAID 0 (can be a pain to set up as they can disappear from BIOS whilst installing windows, bit of tinkering can sort that though)

You would trust those Newegg monkeys to have any common sense to have reviews. Its meaningless and you would have warranty anyways, some Seagates are dodgy as hell.
It ends up being equal.

I had a portable Seagate didnt last a year, I send them an email they wouldnt fix or refund money or anything.

I’ll never understand why a lot of “wealthy” individuals have no appreciation for money.
The PC I built you will be more than enough for your intended usage. Why bother
spending a lot more money on it when you don’t have to? I had a portable Seagate didnt last a year, I send them an email they wouldnt fix or refund money or anything.
I don’t know the whole story, So I got no opinion on that.
But why email em about it when they have an online RMA system? Roberto's build looks good, only change I would make is 2 Samsung 840 Pro Series in RAID 0
He’s not gonna use it as a server nor to read/write incredibly large files, So it’s not really needed. But just for the record, The SSD I suggested has better sequential read/writes than it’s Samsung counterpart.
You would trust those Newegg monkeys to have any common sense to have reviews. Its meaningless
No it’s not, And generalizing people is just senseless!
Surely their reviews do have some substance, Or are you gonna claim all Newegg reviewers are clueless? Come on now
Anyways, I was just pointing out that WD HDDs are not as bulletproof as suggested.
It ends up being equal.
Maybe so, But I still wouldn’t trust a WD due to my own personal experience.

If it was less than 12 months old as you say, then it would be up to the vendor to replace/repair, not the manufacturer. It’s not OEM as it’s a portable.

spending a lot more money on it when you don’t have to? Wealthy? haaa right I wish. If I was wealthy I would have started ordering the parts. lol I need the cores man as many cores as possible rendering time kills me . I would speed up my work significantly which would mean I can work faster and make more $$ Its worth it,
By end of July I should have all the money already to go. I will make another thread and ask you guys for suggestions.
