Hey I would like to re-install windows 7.

August 9th, 2013

Hey forum, I’m in need of a re-install of windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) But I do not wan’t to re-install all of my currently installed programs. So I would basically like to upgrade windows so that my installed programs remain in place.
The last time I tried to do this on a dvd which I thought was compatible with upgrading, I was disappointed to learn that the only way I was able to upgrade was by using some application by microsoft called “anytime upgrade”. it basically copied everything from the old windows folders to the new windows folders.
Do I have to use anytime upgrade in order to re-install windows and have my currently installed programs too? Or is it still possible to just use the windows dvd to upgrade windows 7?

Dude if you want to REINSTALL you will need to format partition….
All you can do is make IMAGE with Acronis.. Then format HDD and install Windows 7 (clean install, not upgrade or anything similar) and then return IMAGE…

Hope that helps..

What are you talking about, No one needs to format anything to install or re-install windows.

For clean installation it would be the best thing to format C:

It used to be as easy as putting my pirated dvd into the drive and running an “upgrade”, which would re-install the windows operating system and it only took about ten minutes to complete. ? Where has that option gone?
But the last time I tried this, the dvd said that upgrading wasn’t an option and I could only do a clean install, which I don’t wan’t to do because then Id have to re-install everything.
I’m not very keen on the image thing either because I assume that will take all day. Plus, If I make an image of everything, won’t that just copy everything as it is? If so, what would be the point of re-installing, if perhaps the image also copies infected programs? (I only suspect I have infected programs)

It’s still there…. but that sux… It’s something like repair Windows….
Anyway, do whatever you want!

First, what do you mean by Upgrade? If you already have Windows 7, you won’t upgrade, but simply install Windows 7 again.
I’m thinking what you are trying to do, is to do a new Installation of Windows 7 on the one you already have. If it is that, what is the point?

Yea but when windows eventually screws up, that which it does (if you’re like me), isn’t the option to upgrade it (re-install the OS) a quick and easy option to get things running smoothly again??

You really don’t understand… do you?
By doing that (what you do) will fix nothing! It will eventually repair some damaged files and leave everything else there (including possible malware, viruses etc)… The best thing is to do FORMAT of HDD (to kill all that ~love~) and then do clean INSTALLATION, not upgrade, just installation..
Answer #9
Take the upgrade off your head mate. IT would be called upgrade if you had Windows XP installed, and want to upgrade to Windows 7.
Anyway, you can overwrite the Windows 7 installation with a new one, but I don’t see the point in that. Old stuff should be on a Windows.Old folder, but then again, what is the point in doing what you want to do, if things will stay the same? If you have a virus, it won’t get removed if you just install windows on it self and not format.

Alright ill take your word for it. But if I then use “Acronis” to create an image, what will that do?
I imagine making an image of everything will be counter productive if i happen to also make an image of infected files. right?
Answer #11
Right, infected files should go there as well. My advise is too backup only the important data you have to a new partition or external HDD and format. Btw, why do you really want to reinstall Windows?

Look, do this..
Format HDD, do clean installation of Windows, install apps that you need/want, and then make IMAGE. You will have DVD with that IMAGE and every time you want to do new installation of Windows all you need is to return IMAGE after installation

To be honest, I don’t wan’t to re-install windows at all, I just wan’t everything to run smoothly again, because right now the OS has slowed down considerably.
I downloaded a key generator a few weeks ago and it didn’t even work. So I’m guessing it was a virus or something and since then the computer has slowed down a bit. I have mallwarebytes running and “comodo internet security pro” but they haven’t exactly helped. although, comodo did pick up some weird behaviour, but there wasn’t much option for me to make an informed decision on how I should have let the program deal with the event.
Basically the AV recognised one of my windows OS files as un-recognised, which is quite suspicious imo.

1 sec, let me think it over.
Edit: ok, I sort of understand. Iv never actually done that before, but it seems simple enough. All but the part where you said that I must re-install the programs I need. Because the truth is that I don’t need 90% of the programs I have, but I do want them, well, some of them. Anyway, the point is that this is all allot of work……..
Answer #14
IMO the best scenario here is format and not just overwrite windows, that won’t solve a thing.
Answer #15
ok.. For now I have decided to do something else. But first, Thanks guys for your support, its always appreciated when people are kind enough to help, thanks
I’m going to go through my programs, see what’s running and when its running, maybe ill be able to sift out some garbage. Plus I will re-check the trusted files in my AV just incase.
Might do a quick OS repair afterwards as well.

Dude, please…
1. Download version of Windows that you want/need, burn to DVD
2. Format HDD (C: parititon)
3. Do clean install of Windows
4. Install programs that you need (AV, etc…)
5. Install Acronis True Image
6. Make IMAGE (exactly copy of OS in that state, with installed apps and everything setup)
7. Keep that image, and everytime you want to reinstall windows, all you need to do after installation is just to return that IMAGE and you will have everything already installed (in just few steps)
