Choosing which Windows 8.1 update help

August 5th, 2016

really need help selecting the most current Windows 8.1 update, pre-activated preferable. the media stuff isn’t particularly significant. possibly an AIO type bootable option. To be used for home media entertainment, but since the WMP doesn’t play DVD folders and the WMC is all but worthless to me, any links to or topic name on would be great. suggestion for specific one would also be helpful.
thank you for any help.
at a hotel with unlimited bandwidth so now is the time for me to make a move. normally limited data plan.

I wouldn’t touch windows 8.1 for a desktop with a barge pole. get windows 7 home premium & tweak it the way you like, 8.1 was designed for touch screen systems. unless you have a touch screen monitor, tablet or laptop; it’s really not worth it. you can tweaks windows 7 to be better than 8.1! anyhow, if you don’t care & still want 8.1, get it from the Apps section from someone like share. I’m dual booting lubuntu 14.04.1 & Windows 7 home premium x64 – much better than 8.1 with the tweaks I have.
good luck.

Here’s a suggestion … BUY YOUR OS. You use it 100% of the time your computer is on and versions can so easily have “other” things included.

Bollocks! Windows 8.1 is perfect for any desktop and with Classic Shell to give you a start button like Windows 7 it’s just like using windows 7. I’ve been using Windows 8.1 Enterprise on a very old x86 PC that has been through Windows XP, Windows 7, and now Windows 8.1 and I’ve had no problems with any of those operating systems.
It’s best to download an MSDN clean .iso then use KMSpico as your crack. It then works just like a fully functional OS with all the usual updates and stuff.

all great input. share is always dependable and I see the advantage of a clean install like you say Saturn, then do the extras. i’m not concerned about whatever might accompany apps/os’s but since I really don’t have anything but a/v stuff on these systems, the nefarious types are free to watch along with me, though they are gonna have to pay for their own bandwidth.
I multi boot as well: 7/8. true, 7 is better with a/v in some ways but newer hardware seems going more the 8 mode.

You can always grab it directly from MS using the process here:

Use one of the default product keys (if yoiu have them), or use the no-product key installation instructions at

wait, what? no need to be a donut & use the language you are! am I swearing at you or anyone else??? NO.
first off, I’m allowed an opinion like everyone here, don’t like it, don’t read it & don’t reply.
second, windows 8/8.1 IS DESIGNED for touch screen systems, yeah, you can use it on a desktop with classic shell & it may seem good, that’s your opinion though. I have tried 8/8.1 & didn’t like it. I still have a key, I even gave tidy a key too. anyway, windows 7 for gaming needs & lubuntu for Internet browsing, XBMC & IRC is good enough for everyone. what I don’t get is, MICROSOFT has told everyone that 8/8.1 WAS DESIGNED for touch system yet you’re saying it’s really amazing on a desktop, really? uhm, NO.
windows 7 with selected tweaks is still better than 8/8.1, fact. end of, I will not comment here again.
each to their own, I however really don’t like Microsoft’s approach with 8/8.1 simply because it’s designed for TOUCH SYSTEMS! using it on a desktop IMO is simply damn right stupid.
OP: windows 7 untouched .ISO w/sp1 & dual booted with lubuntu = happy member!

easy guys. the topic is, as above, not I can beat you up. all the input helps and has it’s own merit. up to the individual to decide what meets their needs in the given scenario. 8 meets my needs here, in this situation. others might want 7. I have both, just looking for a way to download the entire thing from the hotel, rather than just part, then having to get home and install on multi machines then d/l 900mb updates on a data cap plan.
thanks @ for the direct info.
afraid that second link will go in the too hard to do box. any link that has default keys that will allow access, i.e. mydigital requires login for links.

If you think bollocks is a swear word, you’d probably piss your pants if I used a real swear word.
And you are talking bollocks. Just because you can’t use it properly on a desktop just shows you know very little about the OS.
And incidentally, although Microsoft pushed the touch screen bit when they introduced Windows 8/8.1 there is no way in hell they’d introduce a new OS just for a limited market like touch screen. They want to maximize the return on their investment so Windows 8.1 is designed for ALL types of computers.
It’s perfectly fine on any desktop PC and I ran Windows 7 & 8.1 on a dual boot for quite a few months in case there were any problems then I dumped Windows 7 because Windows 8.1 was better.

Here’s another mirror.
http://softicle.com/
The ISOs are English-US only and can be changed to other languages post-install.
Plus, the SHA-1 checksums match those provided by Microsoft on MSDN, and so, are untouched.
After installing, use KMSpico (from the link Sid’s provided) and you’re good to go.
But I’d personally go for the Volume Licensed Pro version (from Paul’s Magnetic Jukebox, the link to which Sid’s posted) or the Enterprise version (from either Softicle or the Jukebox) as they play better with KMS.
Install MediaPortal or XBMC and you have your own home media entertainment setup. Furthermore, you might want to look into OpenELEC if you want a standalone HTPC.
