Need help for a new GPU

January 29th, 2020

Hi,my GPU which i had 3 years died(HD 6850,pretty good for its time),and now i want to buy a new one to play most games on 1080p and high/ultra.Im thinking about R7 260X.Ive read its good card for its bang, though GTX 750Ti is better(but 30+ euro more expensive). My pc specs are:
Athlon ii x4 640
4+ GB memory DDR2(i can get more)
Thermaltake 470 w PSU.
My motherboard is old and supports CPU with bios update, and has PCIE 1.0 slot.
The issues are:
will PSU be able to handle r7 260x at full load?
Will i get bottleneck(although i dont think i will)
WILL in the end see difference from my old 6850?for example with 6850 i ran Crysis 3 on 1680*1200(if i remember) and medium, and still had relatively low FPS.Will 260 run it at high at 1080p decently?GTX 750 Ti is very good but i want to spend my money wisely.
ty.

The R7 260x consumes less power than the HD 6850 does, so it should work The GTX 750 Ti uses even less power
Both are more powerful than the HD 6850

However, I would say that even with the weaker HD 6850 is already bottle-necking your system
Thus, you would not see too big of an improvement in games over your previous graphics card
Getting more ddr2 RAM is also unlikely to improve the performance by much
Still, I would recommend getting the GTX 750 Ti

tech stuff is greedy , so that what u said is impossible , “i want to buy a new one to play most games on 1080p and high/ultra” with R7 260X or GTX 750Ti
and u also speaking games likes crysis and such , R7 260X or GTX 750Ti which are lowest level gaming cards , if they could run latest games on 1080p at ultra or high smoothly , what are other cards for ? everyone would buy those cheapest.
as a conclusion , if u r going to buy one of them for gaming , dont be very hopeful, and ofc 750ti is far better due to its new maxwell architecture and yes it worth the price difference.
you can consider yourself lucky if you can play latest gpu demanding games smoothly(closer to 60fps) at 1080p with medium quality and no msaa or ssaa ofc. if you are thinking about older games , 750ti would do the job. for more info look the link i give to see how your choice of gpus lined up among others , also you can look for fps numbers for every individual game at 1080p to see yourself how low they are , keep in mind texture quality is not even set ultra for testing. possibly high or medium
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/GTX_750_Ti_OC/25.html
for other questions , your psu would be enough for any of those gpus for bottleneck you can only see the exact result after you set up your system , i had a realistic formula to calculate bottleneck but i couldnt find it now . but with experience i can say , you wont have it , at least not in a significant degree since those gpus are not powerful.
pci slots are backwards compatible and they dont cause any significant performance difference as it is claimed to be , but pci 1.0 is really ancient , it would have been better if it was 1.1 , for more info about performance difference among pci slots on a most powerful current single gpu http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GTX_980_PCI-Express_Scaling/21.html
it is good they tested on most powerful one which makes you see clearly the difference between slots due to high fps output.
actually if you tell me your budget , and the price of gtx 750ti and 260x at the shops you are gonna buy , i could give you best suggestion for gaming but then there may be bottleneck issue occurs.

my mobo is this:http://www.e-shop.gr/asus-m2a-vm-p-PER.522533.I think it should have pcie 1.1 or higher,by looking at her specs(because it has SATA 2 HDD connection and i thought it had SATA 1).Also usb ports are 2.0 not 1.0 as i thought.
Answer #4
Yes that link you gave was a bit mixed up with the specs!
Here’s one from ASUS..

You could always add an SSD too, if you want.
Answer #5
Thanks for your answers people, but i seriously not am a money source to be able to afford SSDs and other things.I got 150 Euro currently and i dont think i want to use them all on a GPU because i got other thing to spend money on such as gas for car etc.( fortunately oils price has fallen a lot but still ).My main issue is if:
r7 260 X can play most games on high-medium on 1080p(with HD6850 i could play battefield 3 on high on 1080p without aa,it had hard times only on 64 player servers).
Also ive read about a black screen problem related to drivers(damn you AMD..).Also i wont play every game is released, but when i play something i want to enjoy it.
Also i dont know IF my 470 w PSU can handle it.Because recommended power is 500 watt.Though my 6850 played fine till it died.
ty for your replies.

if you looked the links i gave , they are the results from one of best gpu testing sites and they show the fps you can get at every game. and concept of playing on a specific resolution with specific details is varied thing , you barely can play while u have 10 fps or have mediocre playing with 20-30 fps , what i told based on smooth gaming which starts after 40+ fps generally.
if you are able to buy gtx 750ti , dont even think about r7 260x , 750 ti will worth every single penny u pay more for it. i used amd gpu for all my life but the recept gpu microarchitecture from nvidia named as maxwell made me buy nvidia . and unless amd release a new gpu architecture , no one should buy any amd gpu cuz there is really huge amount of difference between them. the difference dropped all amd gpu prices to half in last 2-3 months. but still dont buy them , unless someone give you for free
for your doubts about psu , gtx 750ti requires only 75W so there wont be any problem and it is %100 , not %99.9 so consider it as the last thing to bother. your psu even can handle 3-4 of them.
and my personal suggestion about gtx 750 ti brand and custom cooler is http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/STRIXGTX750TIOC2GD5/overview/
see if it fits to your budget
Answer #7
Very simply put
Regardless of what graphics card you choose, you should not expect a huge increase (only marginal) in terms of graphical performance
Meaning that the game performance would be similar to when you had a HD 6850
For me, I’d probably just get whatever is cheapest between the two
Answer #8
well i decided to buy this card:http://www.msi.com/product/vga/R7-260X-2GD5-OC.html#hero-overview
i think its pretty good(and its a bit OCed). My previous 6850 was ASUS and i had many problems with it(While my very old i had now on plays fine and i acutally get more FPS on LoL than my previous). So i dont think about ASUS anymore.

no matter what i tell , you are going to do what u want to do asus is best hardware manufacturer , in terms of material quality , engineering and architecture . but that doesnt mean there wont be any defect product with asus or asus’ hardware will perform better at every area , generally asus is a few steps ahead of others. if you asked me 10 years ago , i would tell 10 steps ahead of others but now almost every brand caught some level quality in their products . so brand wouldnt matter generally. but the review from techpowerup that i have given above , was asus’ gtx 750ti review , and given 9 points , chosen editor’s choice so i dont think there would be problem with it.
the reality that i agree with , u wont get a huge difference with your new gpu. there is 1 thing i disagree which , buy the cheaper one , if prices are close between 260x and 750ti , i m saying dont even think about it buy 750ti. amd cooking up the same technology for the last 2-3 series of their gpu , 6000 series 7000 series also the gpu you are gonna buy is same tech , only difference it is little cooked up . on the other hand 750ti is totally new and revolutionary technology , which will give you %15 performance increase over 260x , also effect the ability to play future games better which makes it is more durable against time. if you buy 260x , it wouldnt be suprise that you are gonna post same topic here 1 year later.
also as a last note 260x’s resolution output is max 1600p where gtx 750ti ‘s is 2160p (4K) , i m not telling this cuz you will use either of those resolutions but to show the power difference between them

i appreciate your help, but i prefer spending the rest of my money to something more important due to low income.I want a remporary solution and not something that can last years. Also i wanted gpu because the one i got now on the pc is a 3850 which is very powerless and can play some basic games.CPU is decent and mobo is old but still works,so because my gpu died i thought of buying a cheap one that can replace it and be better for some time.30 euro more could be used for a whole week for me as im uni student.I appreciate all your help and insight for my problem.cheers
Answer #11
you are very welcome , and if you say that price difference is important for you , who am i to say anything about it. you will be able to run every game with 260x but for some you need to lower either resolution or texture quality or the both. since budget is an issue in short term for you , what u r doing is probably best in your point of view. good luck
