Hardware – Buy SSD or stick to “normal” drives

Does it make sense to buy a SSD for that old piece of junk or should I just get a conventional drive and save up for a new machine??
p.s. I can get a 128GB SSD for about 55 EUR and a 500 GB 5400rpm 8MB cache drive for the same price.
get ssd of course. the difference is night and day.
be aware of your motherboard temps. the inside of your chassis/laptop is really really hot. but then again i wouldnt be surprised its a crappy hp branded
well, it’s real dusty so I am going to have to open it up. did that once and the pc was real silent/cool Won’t my other hw specs be a bottleneck even with a SSD?
on speecy click storage on the left side and look for SMART value of your hdd , it says it is dying or not.
for bottleneck issue , harddrives dont cause bottleneck in a way you feel it. for example when a gpu bottleneck occurs , cpu cant process output of gpu which will effect graphics dramatically and cause some problems during gameplay. fast harddrives doesnt do that. the worst case scenario , depending on what you are doing your cpu may handle data amount of 200mb/sec for example , if your ssd could send 300mb/s , that means you wont be able to get full benefit from ssd. 100mb/s will be lost. but this is very complex situation depends on many things. in any case scenario ssd will give you a speed boost compared to traditional harddrive although amount of this boost can vary depending on tasks.
Cpu utilisation for storage is low anyway.
Now that’s interesting. Smart says everything is okay. But from time to time the clicking noises do come by. I mean a click->click->click->rotate->click->click->click noise (repeatedly) the pc then hangs and I can just pull the power plug to get it back.
Here is a screen. I also realised the SSDs I was looking at may be counterfit :p kingfast ~Stop trying to bypass our censor~.

This is the EAN of the one I’m currently looking at 4034303016679
The “fake” (allegedly) kingfast is KF2710MCJ15-120
SSD’s are cheap, you can buy an SSD and have the SSD for the OS and games and keep a HDD for backups etc.
now I’ve used an SSD, I don’t think I’ll ever go back to having a normal HDD for an OS and games.
it’s just so much quicker – for me anyway.
I have a quad core, 8gb ram, on board graphics and MX100 SSD. this system is as fast as they come.
I’m sure you’ll love it – I’ll even bet you that you do.
That and a SSD is an investment you can bring a SSD to a new PC.
well your hard drive seems to be in good condition friend. if a harddrive going to die through its life span , the first symptom is not always but usually a problem about reallocated sector count under smart values. even if it seems to be good. also harddrives doesnt die immediately under normal conditions , you will have dramatically speed decrease like down to 5mb/s or less , at that time smart value and reallocted sector count would give you a medium range warning. after it , harddrive will die in a few months maybe in less according to your usage. if you only think that your harddrive dying just cuz of the sound , it may be something mechanical not even related to harddrive. you need to open and clean your laptop somehow to see whats going on.
Your temp. is very high!

I agree, for the hardware I have I don’t think it’s worth it buying a new SSD. With your H/W it makes sense owning a SSD. The notebook is already 4 years old !!

You are both right. I will open it up and clean it. It’s been getting louder and louder…prolly clogged up vents or something.
