VLC crashing on my Macbook
September 4th, 2020
What version. Had a similar problem with vlc on my PowerBook g4. You bet I’m still rocking it too after 10 years! But for some reason I went to old apps and downloaded a older one and it worked no problems! Mine can’t play mkv or MP4 of course, just lags and the picture never comes in. But avi no problem!
Have you compiled/installed it from the official site?
Hi ,
Could be a number of reasons so let’s start simple.
1. Have you removed VLC and installed the latest version from the official website?
videolan.org
2. Do you have any pending system updates that need to be completed?
3. Did you ever use VLC to open a file from a shared location (i.e. network location, ext. hard drive) that may no longer be accessible?
4. Have you repaired your disk permissions lately? Andrew
@: I have the latest version. It was working fine a few weeks ago. But last week, it started crashing.
@: Yes I downloaded it from the official site. @: 1) When I bought my macbook, I installed the latest version.
2) No I don’t have any pending updates. I always keep it up to date.
3 and 4) Nopes.
I’m currently running OS X Yosemite Version: 10.10.2 (14C1514)
You said in your initial post VLC crashes the moment you attempt to open a movie or TV show. Are these videos the same file type and encoding? i.e. MKV; H.264.
Have you tried opening a music file and seeing if VLC responds the same way?
Can you try to compile it?
@: Oh now that you mention it… It only crashes for .avi. This is the technical info of the series that I’m watching that crashes my VLC.

@: what do you mean compile it? Sorry I’m still new to mac. haha.
If they really are .avi with h264 codec (what are those, anime?), throw this crap at the recycle bin or whatever it’s called at mac and get some nice mkv / mp4 videos. It’s your files that have a problem, not vlc.
@: Jack_Torrance does have a point. The AVI container isn’t probably the best one out there for H264. Try and download MKV next time as it’s a better container for H264 and Mac.
Also not that this shouldn’t really be an issue but the proprietor of AVI is Microsoft. It shouldn’t really interfere but who knows what these companies do behind closed doors!
If you can’t find MKV or MP4 files, you can also look at converting them to MKV/MP4 using iSkysoft Media Converter. Haven’t used it personally, however looks simple and the real deal. Here’s a thread I found:
