yes , there are ones but they may require additional things to play such as hamachi. or services like tunngle or garena. left 4 dead for example , it has a good topic on tunngle for downloading it then you can play either via tunngle client or via hamachi after you create virtual LAN with your friends.

No. They require those softwares to turn two remote PC like on LAN. You can play in LAN without additional software. Hamachi work by creating a fake LAN because the LAN mode works without additional things. It’s the other way around: remote multiplayer needs additional software; this other mode(LAN) is nearly always working.

i didnt say anything different i m not multiplayer type but i played a few with friends in the past. generally hamachi would be enough but sometimes there can be need for special configurations which can not be done by medium level user. so going those tunngle or garena where they already have pre-configured settings , you just create a server via their service and play without headache. ofc there are headaches related to them ; such as suddenly disconnecting from their server.

I remember playing DOTA with a LAN connection in the classroom with my friends.

Check out Tunngle dot com
They have servers for MP and LAN for many current and older games,
You install their software, join the game lobby, launch your game, play (even pirate games)
