Insurance question
July 28th, 2013
Call insurance and ask?!
Your question isn’t very clear.
So….
Person “1” buys a car, and has the car registered in their name. (doesn’t have insurance)
Person “2” wants to insure the car – and drive the car?
Is this correct?
Not 100% sure in america but in the UK you can do
Call your insurance company an they’ll tell you. But I’m pretty sure you can, though both people need an insurance on the car in order to drive it, you can’t just have someone else insure it and you drive it without insurance.
The insurance must be in the name of the owner. If not, DMV will not receive notice that the car is insured and the owner will be fined. As long as the car is insured, anyone can drive it. It’s the car that’s insured, not the person.
At least, that’s my understanding. Of course, New York has exceptions to everything, so definitely call your insurance company.
And don’t forget, even if the other person has to have the insurance, you can pay for it. They just have to have a lot of trust in you as not paying it can cost them a lot of money with the fines from DMV for a lapse in coverage.
In the UK you can.
eg. In your case you own the car, the other person has full insurance on that car and has you as a named driver on the policy for that car.
