Some noob question about mac

December 25th, 2013

Hey
I used to have a mac before i got my pc
Before then i always worked with a mac but then i bought a pc
Now i was wondering if the following would be possible, sorry if it’s a noob question but i just would like to know :/
So i have my pc and a 1TB external hdd
Would it be possible to download mac os x lion or leopard or something, then install it on my external hdd and then choose what i want to use when i start my pc
So i would still like to keep my pc windows install but also have the ability to run mac on it.
Again sorry if this is a stupid question
Only answer if you can help, don’t just say i’m a noob because of this question, i know there are people who would like to reply with a helpfull answer

You will more than likely not find ethernet and/or wi-fi card drivers that are compatible with both OS’es.
If you are gonna run it from an external, it’s gonna be slow.
Answer #2
It’s probably not possible to run OSx from an external drive (it’s hard enough to get OSx86 to run anyway).

It is actually quite easy to set up, Apple will even help you on their support forums with how to do it, if you have a Mac as your main OS
As it’s a breach of the OSX licensing agreement using it this way, then they won’t…
However, as in my previous post, it will run slow through USB 2.0 (which is what I am presuming the OP is using). If you were running a Mac you would use firewire 800 (faster than USB 2.0) or Thunderbolt.
I have Snow Leopard on an external, but can connect it with Firewire 400
You couldn’t have done this say 3 years ago, because Mac didn’t support USB

Bootable USB drives: A storage device such as a SuperDisk, Zip disk, or other USB storage drive can be used to hold a valid system folder and used at startup.
EDIT – @SoulBeat
For an ethernet card these would be compatible with both OS’es
Netgear GA311NA Gigabit NIC PCI Card (Realtek 8169 chipset)
or
TP-Link TG-3269 (Realtek 8196 based)

Answer #5
It is possible to run OSx from an external drive if it’s setup correctly. Unfortunately it’s a bit more difficult than just creating a separate partition for it.
Answer #6
Thanks for all the replies already
So if i would make a partition on my internal hdd it would be better?
And will i be able to choose what os i want to use when i start up my pc?

You know, unless you have a “hackintosh”, then you may not be able to do so. This should have the info you need:
