[SOLVED] 5.1 sound on a tv with no audio outputs at all?
December 30th, 2013
After deciding i wanted an audio upgrade, i bought myself a nice 5.1 surround sound set, only to discover that firstly my tv only has INPUTS (hdmi, RCA and scart) and no outputs apart from the headphone socket.
The 5.1 system does not work with the headphone socket, just gives me static from the subwoofer so im assuming the socket does not have enough power for the speakers.
I also have an xbox 360 i want to use with the tv / speakers too, this connects via a HDMI cable.
Any ideas on how i can get the tv and xbox to work with the speakers? Cheaply if possible.
edit: Just to get the picture of things – im plugging my xbox 360 direct to the tv using an HDMI cable. Previously i was getting the 360’s audio from the tv’s headphone port with the 2.1 speaker set. My new 5.1’s can connect to a headphone jack (which does not appear to work) or an RCA
Are you sure the Scart socket don’t have any audio output?
Do you have the right Scart cable with Audio out?

Im using the tv’s built in freeview, and there is no audio selection in the menu’s, so i assume audio out from scart wouldnt work? Only thing i have to hand is a scart to RGB adapter too. It’s an el cheapo bush tv so…
I’ll sum it up in 2 lines:
5.1 computer speakers (With 3.5mm connectors) can only be used with a computer.
5.1 real-world speakers can only be used with a receiver (also known as “av receiver” or “home cinema receiver”)

That was a big mistake on your part,Usually people verify compatibility before buying any kind of addon for their existing hardware.
Edit: Also note that the number of channels depends on source material too,I.E if something has stereo sound your not gonna get 5.1,Unless your PC/Receiver has a special function to clone stereo to fake 5.1.

I’ve listen to that surround sound emulation on TV’s and pro sound systems.
Remarkable likeness considering how it’s done with only 2 channels. (imo)
Well, i’ve partially soved the issue. Replaced the cable i used and tried the headphone jack again. Works now, not the best solution but it’l have to do i suppose. Ask me anything about tech, computers and so on and i’ll know it right away – but give me a tv or audio system and im lost. Guess the solution would be to get an amplifier and an external freeview box or something and connect it all up that way. Eh….seems like a waste to use the new sound system through a 2 channel headphone jack but my TV doesnt support any other solution. Really should of checked before if it had any sort of audio output :/
If you had a home theater amplifier, you could connect it to the digital coaxial or optical output on the TV.
This gives the raw audio that the amplifier can decode.
Actually you are lucky that your TV has a headphone socket…Some have no analogue outputs at all..

If only it was that simple, but as i said it has NO outputs at all apart from the headphone socket, only HDMI, Scart and RCA INputs
SOLVED: I’ve bought a 5.1 audio decoder, and have connected it all up that way.
