File Too Long or Invalid / Can’t Move Folder

December 14th, 2013

I need some help guys!
I was moving some files from one external hd1 to another external hd2. While moving, some files could not be moved because “The file name you specified is not valid or too long.”
The file name is not even long, and it is weird that it gives me this error, since I was able to save it like that earlier and store it on the other hd.
PLEASE NOTE: I HAVE FORMATTED THE HD2 USING QUICK NTFS. ONLY AFTER I HAVE DONE THIS, I’VE BEEN GETTING THIS ERROR. EVERYTHING WAS FINE EARLIER.
My second problem is that I can’t move a specific folder to my desktop from my hd1. I am dragging and dropping, copying and pasting and nothing happens. It is a documents folder with different powerpoints and word files. I was able to move it earlier.
I tried restoring windows to an earlier date, did not work.
Please help, this frustrates me.

Use TeraCopy.

Also, remember, file names include the entire directory, so copy to and from your root folder to shorten names.

But it’s weird because I’m trying to copy the file from the root to the root of hd2 and it’s giving me that problem.
Will this help me with my second issue?

If your having issues copying while booted into the OS, boot into a live cd, and copy files from there…
Answer #4
just to be sure, get “Hard Disk Sentinel” and check your drives for physical problems like bad blocks
you can try a file manager, I use Powerdesk, and see if it bypasses the restrictions
also try running it “as administrator” from the RT click menu
