Portable HD Probs

I have a problem with a seagate 1T usb connectable portable HD. A smart person can solve this, but there is a dummy on this end.
Problem: The PC does not recognize the drive most of the time when I plug it in, I am tired of going to computer management/disk drives where it is always recognized but void of any drive letter. I add the drive letter and am good to go, but WHAT can I do to avoid this hassle?

Don’t sell yourself short,Just because your lacking knowledge in a certain department it doesn’t make you a dummy,The world
would be a boring place if all people knew the same stuff

Considering it’s recognized I’d say it’s likely an OS problem,But trying other USB ports will be a good idea,If that doesn’t help,Try
testing it on another PC to see if this happens there too,Or alternatively,Use system restore.

Have you tried it on more than one PC? To rule out the issue of a Windows problem on that computer.

when you assign the drive letter pick one way down like “N” or below
I assign all my drives/partitons distinct letters (ABGHIJKLMNOPSTUVW are my current ones)
A & B are flash drives and am running 5 USB partitioned physical hard drives
and they always connect with the correct letter

Maybe its just wire connection problem between the pc and HD. Try using a different cable. HOT TUNA ur back!

I remember when HOT TUNA was the Administrator of W-BB back in the day. How’re you doing Tuna?
I had a similiar issue, connecting a USB external HD and Windows not recognizing the drive. Yet when I plugged into my Lappy it showed up right away. Drove me nuts.
What solved it for me was:
In BIOS > Power Management > ACPI
Set to:
S1
Standby
Maybe that will do the trick for you.

Yep, Cleaning and reseating or replacing cables such as USB or SATA can often do the trick..Just had a problem like that myself..
And definitely watch ur back

Yes there are no end of Bios or Windows problems that can necessitate the need for a rethink over a few beers Often quite a different solution can do the trick

if you run an add on disk defragmenter, like O&O defrag, that could cause this problem too, i had it happen. i had to set it to NOT automatically defrag removable drives, and this fixed it.

it shows up there and is readable, it just won’t give it a letter
