 Tips & Tricks For Windows ♥
A is for All
CTRL+A is the almost-standard short cut for “Select All” menu item / function. Try it the next time you have to select everything (files, text, graphics, etc.) in a program.
Become a System Editor
If you have a need to view or edit your main system configuration files such as PROTOCOL.INI, SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI, CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT all at once, simply select “Run” from the “Start Menu,” type “SysEdit” and press ENTER.
Clean your path
As you install and uninstall programs over a long period of time, you’ll notice that some programs starts to run little bit slower. Once of the reasons for this maybe that your
program search path is either contains too many directories, or it contains references to some directories that does not exist.
It’s a good idea to check if your “PATH” environment variable is “clean,” every so often.
- 1. If you’re using Windows 95, look in your “AUTOEXEC.BAT” file for the PATH statement:
PATH=<list of directories separated by a semi colon>
If you’re using Windows NT, go to “My Computer | Properties | Environment,” and then look for a PATH statement in both “System” and “User” variables sections.
2. Now go through each directory in your PATH and see if they exist; if not, remove them from your PATH.
For example if your PATH contains
C:\WINDOWS;Z:\TEMP;C:\UTILS;
and if Z:\TEMP directory no longer exists (you can find out by running “DIR Z:\TEMP” from the “DOS/Command Prompt“) change your PATH to:
C:\WINDOWS;C:\UTILS;
Find files…
Don’t forget the power of “Find Files or Folders” utility (“Start Menu | Find | Files or Folders…“). For example, you can use this utility to find out the largest files on your system or search for files that are possibly too old to be on your system.
* Select “Start | Find | Files or Folders...”
* Change “Look in” to “Local hard drives…”
* Select “Advanced” tab
* Change “Size is” to “At least”
* Set “KB” to 4096 (for example)
* Click on “Find Now
Network without network cards
Did you know that you can easily connect two Windows 95 computers using a direct cable connection between parallel or serial ports?
- * Go to the “Control Pa”
* Double click on “Add/Remove Programs”
* Select “Communications” from the “Windows Setup” tab
* Click on “Direct Cable Connection”
* Press “OK”
Speed-up the response of your Start Menu
Feel like your Start Menu takes just too long to open pop-up (sub) menus? This could delay could add up if you have to travel through a few pop-up menus to get to your word processor every day. Here’s how you can speed thing up a little:
- 1. Run Registry Editor (regedit.exe in Windows 95 and regedt32.exe in Windows NT).
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Pa\Desktop
3. Modify “MenuShowDelay” parameter to contain something from 2 to 20. If you don’t see the MenuShowDelay parameter, add it as a string item and set the value.
Suspend auto-play
To stop Windows from automatically playing a music CD, hold the SHIFT key down while inserting a CD in the player.
Too many folders?
By default Windows will open a new window every time you click on a folder icon / shortcut. If this makes your desktop harder to manage, you can ask Windows to keep using the same folder window to display folders.
- * Open “My Computer” folder
* Select “View | Options..”
* Change to the “Folder” tab
* Select “Browse folders by using a single window that changes as you open each folder”
* Click on “OK”
Quick run
If you still use “Start | Programs | Accessories | Notepad” to run Notepad, you might appreciate the “Run” command in the “Start menu.”
- 1. Click on “Start” (or press CTRL+ESC) and select “Run”
2. Type the program name you want to run and press ENTER.
For example, to run Notepad, type notepad and press ENTER.
This method will let you run any program that’s in your PATH. This of course includes the programs that’s in your Windows directory such as PBrush (Paint Brush), MPlay32 (Media Player), Command (Command/DOS Prompt), etc.
Wallpapers – for better or worse
Did you know that on some computers using a [background] wallpaper could slow down the system performance? See if this is the case on your computer by comparing the performance with and without a wallpaper.
