I had this problem many years ago. You need to edit a system file (System.ini) in order for Win 98 to function with large amounts of memory. Limiting the file cache or limiting the memory are options. You might have to remove some memory to get it to install and then edit the files before re-installing the memory. Or start the install, then edit the file from DOS and then re-start setup. It’s been a very long time since I installed Win 98 so cannot remember what’s possible.

This memory manager might be useful:

Look over this site when you get it installed because it should allow you to tweak windows to improve it’s function.

I just came across this which might be worth looking at. I have never used it so I can make no claims either way.

windows 98 does not run well on 64 bit processors, that could be your problem.
Answer #10
Yes, that’s a dual core P4.
Windows 7 would run fine on that.!
So XP at the very least, I would think.

If have to format monthly, you need to learn how to use your computer.
Not to mention you can just set it up the way you want it, and make an image, then blow that image on every time you feel inclined to reinstall, done.

Not enough to make a difference.

That’s not a good reason at all!
You do realize that Win 98 is no longer supported right?
If a computer can’t run XP, its trash (I know for a fact your pc will run it).
If you want to maximize performance, get XP Gamer Edition, or TinyXP.
Gamer Edition is super light, but you will need to have your drivers handy.
PS: I am running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 on an E4500 with 2GB of RAM with no problems.

Actually, it’s pretty much known that XP runs a lot faster than 98 on older machines (if optimized correctly).

Ok first of all, installing windows 98 is no problem, and actually RECOMMENDED, if you want to play some win16/win32 games that were written before 1999, *IF* you have the hardware for it, like old gameport joysticks, Creative Labs Soundblaster Pro/SB16/AWE, etc, GLIDE only games (Voodoo1/2/3) and so on. 98 pretty much ran everything very well until around 2002 (ME and 2000 were stopgaps), which is when XP successfully blended the technologies, and was what Windows 2000 SHOULD have been.
If you’re running old DOS and 98 based stuff and have hardware designed for those operating systems, then it’s fine having a 98/DOS computer. If your games are newer than 1998, then you’re better off with XP. Also if you have old style game controllers and other hardware, DOSBOX might not work reliably with those, especially if they were programmed with a DOS utility. If you have a newer computer, just stick with XP/W7 dual boot and DOSBOX. And as written above, 98 will crash on computers with 768+ MB of RAM unless you limit the file cache.
DOSBOX solved most of the old DOS issues, besides being able to use old flight stick hardware on some older games.
Besides a real MS DOS/DOSBOX rig, the only reason to have 98 is if you have games that won’t run correctly on XP. I actually have quite a few games in the to play list, that still crash and burn on XP, in various annoying ways….
Basically, if someone needs windows 98/DOS, they already know why, and wouldn’t be asking in a forum I actually have three computers, my i7-2600k with XP/W7 dual boot, a Pentium 4 with XP only, and some gameport controllers (with my Audigy 2), and a Pentium 3 1.4S with Windows 98SE/DOS, Soundblaster 16, Roland SCC-1, etc. I was actually playing Time Commando on it last night (a game I never finished …)

Yes, agree with the rest..
I’ve had a p4 as a junky computer, a fun thing, and it ran Xp fine.
Just grab one of the tiny versions and after installation, acronis image it.
Again, if you need to reinstall every month of so, you’re definitely oing it wrong. Myabe one every 6 months, just to clean the crap out, I might have replaced the image..
