If you edit the XP boot.ini file (it’s hidden so you will have to show hidden files to access it). Ubuntu might have made a boot.bak file on the Windows drive when you installed it. If it did just change the boot.bak to boot.ini
If not your boot.ini file should look like this (where “C–XP” is the name of the drive on your computer):
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="C--XP" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Then, using Hirens Boot CD (cos I think it’s the best ) make your windows partition active, the ubuntu one inactive then boot your computer. After that you can format the ubuntu partition to NTFS or you can do this whilst you are using Hirens.
Make sure the boot.ini file is in place first though.
When you dual boot with ubuntu the grub loader takes control of boot management for both windows and linux so if you just delete the linux partition without sorting out the boot.ini file first you will have problems.

U have to rewrite the MBR with the Windows Boot loader, then with any partition manager, even with gparted in the ubuntu live cd, u have format and join the partitions togheter losing only files on the deleted partition.
