SSD or Rampage III?

August 8th, 2016

Hey guys,
I’m getting a new PC, max price of 1700 without tax/shipping. I built this on newegg:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=20574848

Now, that build has a SSD. However, I’m not sure if I should keep the SSD, or toss it for a Rampage III:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131642
I’m going to be overclocking, but I’m an experienced OC’er (all my systems have custom volts/clocks). So I’m not sure if the easy OCing that the Rampage offers is needed. The Sabertooth offers good features as well.
So, in the end, as a high-end gamer/OCer, what’s worth more? The Rampage Mobo or the 80GB Intel X25-M?

You need to make your wishlists public.

oops, I did but I posted the private link. Public link is: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=20574848

You know you can get that CPU from Microcenter for $230 right?
Additionally, I’d consider two 40GB drives instead of a single 80GB drive and set up RAID0.
Answer #4
forget SSD, get a few of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136320
and put them in a RAID0.. paying USD$200+ for 80gb is outrageous!

Oh, yeah, I completely forgot about that. Plus the MicroCenter here has half tax =O.
Thanks. It’s close to me too xD
And Hmm, alright I’ll check out prices on two 40GB’s.
Answer #6
You can save me the money you’ll save if you want…yanno, since I reminded you and everything.

I think he is willing to pay for speeeed…fast speed.
Those Intel’s I gave up watching for those to dip way down in price. The only thing newegg offered
in the past 2-3 months was $30 rebate, if I remember.

Remove the Intel 80GB SSD(overpriced much?) and the X58 Sabertooth, add the Rampage III Formula & a 64GB Corsair Nova Series SSD. I do hope you know that you’ll need another HDD for storage..
I’d also suggest replacing the 1200 case with a 900 II or a HAF 932, you honestly won’t need all those drive bays.
forget SSD, get a few of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136320
and put them in a RAID0

SSDs are for instantaneous read times, something HDDs can’t do due to their seeking.
Answer #9
There’s a lot of stuff wrong with your wishlist. Let me have a look at it and I’ll be right back
Image
– Better case (tool-less bays and better cable management)
– You forgot HDD
– Way faster SSD. I recommend not RAIDing SSDs as you’ll lose the TRIM ability
– Cheaper 470 SLI (they’re all the same)
– Antec TP-750. It’s semi-modular, has lower ripple and is more efficient than the TX-850 and is enough for 470 SLI even overclocked. It can do 900W if needed. Cheaper too
– Some better memory. The Patriot Viper Sector 7s can overclock to 2000MHz @ CL9. There isn’t a better kit below $130
– The Cooler Master V8 is crap. Period
So, in the end, as a high-end gamer/OCer, what's worth more? The Rampage Mobo or the 80GB Intel X25-M?SSD definitely and I have a R3E. The SSD will give you an instant boost to everything you do with the PC. I have the 100GB Vertex 2. The R3E has a great board and can reach insane BCLKs. I have benched @ 4.7GHz on water on mine. Overclocking depends on the chip you have though and just because you have an expensive motherboard doesn’t mean you can achieve a good OC. The thing that sold me on the R3E was it’s board layout. The spaces make it really easy for water cooled SLI setups and it can do true 16x/16x SLI plus it looks absolutely awesome if you have a window. That said they hadn’t released the Rampage 3 Formula when when I bought the R3E and comparing the two I would go for the Formula. It’s almost the same with more USB headers, better onboard sound. If not tri-SLI/PhysX etc definitely go with the Formula instead. It’s a much more refined board than the R3E. It can be had on Newegg as Open Box for $225

Awesome build there Dream, thanks alot. I’m sure to take a few idea from there such as the Case and the PSU. However, my current PC has 3 1TB drives, and once I switch over, I’ll only need one for the OS. So I’ll take the 2 drives and put them in this new PC. They’re 1TB Hitachi DeskStar’s. Pretty good HDD’s and they’re pretty new as well.
Also, I’m a guy big on names. I generally tend to pick things that have great reviews, or things I’ve had great success in, over things I’ve never used. However, this new build is completely new to me so the second doesn’t apply. The first does. I’ve never heard of “Sparkle”, and to be honest, for the extra 20 dollars each, I’d rather have good security: “Oh, its EVGA, they make outstanding products.” I’ve also used EVGA’s RMA service due to a DoA, and it was quick and painless. I got my new GPU in 6 days. The thing has great ratings and I trust EVGA more than any other company for GPUs.
Also, yes, the Vertex 2 seems much better, I read some reviews and it outperforms the X25. I don’t know if I stated this before, but This build is fairly old, about 4-5 weeks. So I’m gonna build a new updated wishlist and post it here once It’s complete.
Thanks for the help so far. =D
*EDIT*
So I was looking into the SSDs and found 2 90GB versions. the 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch versions. What’s the difference besides the size? Because the bigger one’s a bit cheaper. I looked at the specs and everything seems to be the exact same. Even the Model number is the same aside from OCZSSD2 vs OCZSSD3…
*EDIT 2*
The i7 950 on newegg is 295 vs MicroCenter’s 230… Lol.
*EDIT 3*
New updated (leeched, thanks! =P) wishlist:

Just gotta subtract 65 dollars cause I’m buying the CPU from MicroCenter instead.

You can’t get the CPU from Microcenter’s website, do you have one within driving distance?

Yuup, it’s right around the corner (literally it’s about 15 mins away down a highway which I live right next to)
xD. Awesome(er!) part is that where the MicroCenter is located is technically a “poor” area, and the government cut the tax in half, so MicroCenter has half the state tax <3

Ah, Well it’s only cheaper cause there’s a sale on newegg. Normal prices are the same.. Hmmm.. I’m guessing the 2.5’s for laptops (or atleast, made so it can fit inside laptops) while the 3.5 is the standard desktop size.. That’s the only difference that I can think of.. Hmm.

I ended up with 2.5 and really didnt know what was different between them other than maybe for laptop

New updated (leeched, thanks! =P) wishlist:
Your case is different from the one I’ve picked in my list. Mine has a black interior. Yours doesn’t. The black version is newer than the old one and there is no price difference. Corsair H50 is crap. It’s scales terribly beyond a certain temperature. A high end air cooler is leaps and bounds better. The H50 is good for cramped cases like mITX and etc where height/clearance is an issue which you wont have with the HAF932. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207003
This is the same PSU as the HX750 only in a different shell and a lot cheaper

Alright, though I’ve read good reviews and benchmarks. It is a bit higher priced than some of the other HSF’s out. I’ll research that a bit more.
Also, I’m gonna buy this build in pieces, just grabbing prices. My original plan was to buy the parts when the GTX580 will be released, but I guess I’ll just buy the GPU’s then. The GPU and SSD will be the last things I buy cause I think those will change the most in price. (Seeing as new SSD’s are emerging and the new GTX’s will come out, hopefully the current price will be reduced).
Thanks alot mate, you’ve helped alot. Hah. I haven’t built a PC in about.. 2 years now so I’m not up to date with the new things.

You mentioned you were an overclocker. That’s the only reason I chose the Megahalems. The Megahalems is far from the best though. There’s stuff like the Venomous X, Archon, Silver Arrow, Cocage Arrow, NH-D14 but I didn’t pick either of them because they weren’t available on Newegg/the Patriot memory was too tall to support them. If you could spend around $130 you could get a starter WC loop

Ah.. That explains it. Now, I heard about some large release in early 2011, do you know what that was? >.>’ Sorry, I’m really behind on all this. Haha.
Hmm, I’m a little scared, to be honest, about watercooling. I think I might be able to squeeze in the extra 60-70 dollars, but I’ve never used it before. So I’m venturing into completely new territory. All my past builds have had Zalmans or CM after market HSFs. Nothing water cooled. But I see that the positive attributes are well worth it. I’m just not sure though. I think an air cooler will suffice for now. I’ll think about upgrading to WC if my temps are too hot for my liking, or if I plan to push the CPU beyond 4GHz.

You should join a hardware forum and start a thread there. Opinions and help from lots of different people are are better than just one person’s
