Not sure?? Did you launch a program from said external?
Word of advice… never launch a program from your external drives.
I always launch programs from my primary operating system drive.

From your perspective… how bad does said external look as far as infection?
How big is said external, if the external is fair in size, I would just see if I could transfer the data from the infected external to a drive that can support the amount of data, then I would format the drive, an when I am finished formating said external, I would move the data back onto the drive.
That’s the only way to be sure that the drive is infection free.
If said external is tp large in size (1 TB+) , an I have no drice with the amount so place to store the existing data, then I would probably start running a series of cleaning scans.
If your Anti Virus program is not picking up on said infection, try a series of other scans.
Malware Bytes

Also try some free AV online scanners

http://www.kaspersky.com/virus-scanner

SPYWARE SCANNER.

Run Malware Byes, then two of the Anti Virus free scans an then the SPYWARE FREE ONLINE SCAN to see if it renders the external infection free.
Being your primary (O.S.) drive is not infected, you should have a fighting chance in combating the intrusion on your external.
Thou.. the process I have listed above might somewhat cleanse the drive, somewhat making it stable to perform, I would still opt to format the drive in the near future, just to be sure.
P.S. What Anti Virus software you surrently have installed?
Answer #4
just do an AV scan and after do a Malwarebytes scan..
if nothing happens reformat the drive..“if no important files inside”
