yeh if ya have a genuine key it will activate it if ya look at the topics in apps section with it theres a guide how to do it
whats the cheapest way to get a genuine key if you have to buy it ?
You’ll just have to get a 8.1 Home whatever retail version from your local store when it comes out. That’s the only way.
I’m considering doing it myself, but I’m also trying to figure out if I can just use my OEM key for like WZT’s Final when it comes out, as I’m sure it will, or their RTM version that’s currently out.
Anyone know if I can use my OEM key for a fresh install of Win 8.1???

Windows 8.1 will be available from MS as a free update to anyone who has any legit version of Windows 8, including OEM.
However, for a clean install of a legit Windows 8.1 you will have to wait for the release on October 18, 2013 and purchase a retail license. (or install an imminent working version)

That is correct.
I actually don’t get this….
RTM is “release to manufacturing” which means it’s basically OEM right, so how come a OEM key that DOES belong to that same Laptop wouldn’t work for a clean install of the RTM 8.1?
In simple terms, a OEM license is one that the manufacturer or system builder pre-installed on your computer and is tied to that laptop only.
You can update your OS to 8.1 because that’s what Windows 8.1 is; an update.
A retail license is one that a consumer can purchase and install / reinstall on a computer(s) and requires a different key & COA label. I will be using my OEM key on the “same” laptop, but you’re saying I still can’t do a fresh install of the OS unless it’s specifically the OS version?
How is it that people have been able to download MSDN ISO’s directly from MS and use their OEM key to do fresh installs then with like Win7?
Apparently MS is NOT going to release an OEM ISO for Win8.1, which is my issue…..
Hmmmm…. I just bought an MSI GT70 20C-065US, will be here beginning next week and some are stating that using a Win8 disk will install fine with their OEM key because it’s in the BIOS.
I need to ask them to clarify what they mean, if they mean any Win8 disk will install and activate, etc. They didn’t seem to be saying the backup image either.
