Cracking a Word doc password – advice please

January 4th, 2022

I know this is going to be hard but my friend has been slowly writing a book using Word and has forgotten the password.
Can anyone give me some suggestions on the best way to go about cracking the password please, such as which software to use or best method.
Many thanks in advance

Give these apps a try:

Do note that since version 2007, Office uses 128BIT AES encryption, Which is not easy to crack!
If the password was really short (Or if your friend remembers some details of it) then he might get lucky, But otherwise, It’s just not gonna be possible to recover it (Unless he’ll go thru hypnosis at least!)

I have a feeling it was originally started in Word 2007 so I’m hoping she didn’t update it. Thanks for the links I’ll give them a try.

I think you may have misunderstood what I was trying to say.
since version 2007 = from 2007 onwards! (As in 2007 and newer)

Darn, I did. Oh well, was worth a try. Thanks for your help

Don’t give up just yet, Give those apps a try first!
If your friend used a common word, name or number combination as the password, Then it just might find it!
Brute-forcing (Trying all possible combinations) is not the only way to crack a password. Another one is using a dictionary (wordlist) attack (Which both of the apps mentioned are capable of) So things could still work out in the end!
