usenet question: current usage/popularity

July 25th, 2016

had roadrunner back in 2005 which had a relatively decent news server. at that time you could find for practical purposes anything you might be searching for. absolutely great. I got an earthlink dialup subscription, about 6.95 a month then, for the sole purpose of gaining access to their news server. I used my RR high speed then connected to earthlink with my earthlink logon info. earthlink news server was the best I ever had, by far.
so the question is: is usenet still used and worthwhile as it was? a relative question, I suppose better, is it worth having now? how much worth having, as in kinda?

Well, definitely not as much as it used to be, but if you’re chasing some things on “binaries” newsgroups then hell, yes. And I was using hitnews(dot)com every now and then, it had the best pricing for my internet speed and very good retention.

exactly, binaries. I was just wondering if it was worth taking another run at it. thanks for the update and the recommendation. not exactly searching for anything in particular but the range of binaries was absolutely amazing. just browsing was worth the price of admission, so to speak.
thank you

Then you should definitely take a look of binsearch(dot)info which is nice .nzb search engine.
