Cannot Copy File

I’m using Windows XP Professional and I’m backing up all my files to my external HDD so I can install Windows 7, all files and folders are transferred except from a folder which gives me this error,

umm … probably a file with an illegal character in the name.
Try running Microsoft CHKDSK utility against the disk containing file with ? character. This character is not allowed in Windows and will be fixed automatically, then you’ll be able to delete that file.

chkdsk /p and try again to copy your files.

Maybe the file or folder’s length is over the 256 character limit in Windows. To defeat that, rename the folder you are trying to copy it to temporarily to 1 and then you should be able to copy the file to it, and then you can rename it to what it was. Or maybe the file or folder is locked. Use a utility called UnLock IT and then it should copy good.
