Can i add RAM
July 25th, 2016
it depends on so many things sadly .. if the laptop has 1 singular 4gb ram chip then the quick answer is no
Just add the RAM and find out..The worst thing can happen is it will either work or not..
As for limitations and how much RAM your laptop can handle..Read the laptop user guide..
is correct – it’s highly unlikely that the ram will cause any major problem.
At the worst, it just won’t boot.
Next comes – it’ll boot but windows won’t see the extra ram.
And then you get fully normal working with all the ram seen.
If it doesn’t work, just remove it again.
(Proviso – I’m unsure is laptop ALL use the same voltage memory – this might be an issue)
Why not look at the chip that’s already in there? Check the speed, and type (DDR2?) and see if you have RAM that matches.
IIRC, if you put in memory that’s too fast for the motherboard to handle, it’ll just run at a slower speed.
why risk the lappy shoving a 2gig chip into a 2 slot board that has 1 4gb.. yeah nothing should go wrong but there isn’t even a 0.1% chance it’d work ?… I think hehe.. I thought it was a pretty prudent question that would at least keep gung ho kinda responses out of the equation till he replied.. guess I was wrong.
Edit, just assuming its a 2slot board.. tri chan was prevailant for a while…. hence my question

great advice, really.. top notch. ram is ram right !… oh wait.. sure there are other numbers….. nvm, you have this under control !
Edit, sorry.. having a bad couple days .. to avoid issues you need the same CL speed and volts, kinda.. its best practice.. sometimes you can get away with higher clock ram with lower cl, underclocking and overclocking at the same time.. if it is comfortable with doing that in its voltage range (which is limited by both chips.. again Kinda .. have some leeway).. its a minefield.. sorry but when people say just shove it in or don’t worry, it will run at the slower speed….. why ?.. when was the last time you shoved random ram chips into your pc and it has worked ?.
Edit 2: before any of that he needs to check if he has a rare tri chan lappy with 2x2gig(and one free slot), or any normal lappy with 1x4gig… everything else is silly untill he finds that out hehe, next is counting the pins… if anyone reads this thread post please do not take the advice of shove it in
Check what model it is and then you can find out what ram it can take and what speed.
Even if he has tri chan, throwing in a chip that might fit and should work is insanely risky… especially with tri chan, lol.. best case they are all in the same range, worst case the board tries to run one of them too fast, or the 2 existing ones too fast hehe.. its a coin toss with old (and new, lol) hardware… say the different chip runs at higher voltage and random bios thinks thats what they all run at. heh, 2 fried ram chips for the price of one… I honestly don’t care what people think the internet said was ok, trust me and google it again, this shove it in attitude has to stop, lol.. its such idiocy and I’m sick of trying to fix peoples broken pcs
or just ask yourselves why we do not use tri chan.. google it… google anything.. apologies for the rant, but .. ugh
Before bla bla and bla
Go look up your laptop model and look at the ram spec. See how much it can expand up to. If it expandable up to 4GB. Close that tab and go watch youtube or something. Its not going to happen
If its greater than 4GB. Start reading.
