Can you convert USB 3.0 to 2.0?

December 25th, 2013

I have a 500Gb WD passport that is USB 3.0, but my Philips BDP2700 blu-ray player is USB 2.0, so it does not read files on the hard drive. Is there anyway to ‘convert’ 3.0 to 2.0? Thanks.
Answer #1
You sure the drive is formatted in a way that the Blu Ray player can read? USB3.0 devices will work in USB2.0 ports (the same way USB2.0 devices will work in USB1.1 ports), they’ll just be limited to USB2.0’s speed cap.
Answer #2
Yea, USB 3.0 is backward compatible.

I think you got it wrong.
Which file did you try to play on your blu-ray player?
May be it’s not compatible with .MKV.
USB 3.0 -> 2.0 is Backward compatible. It should be your file.
Also, remember some Players do-NOT recognize drivers formatted with NTFS (make sure its fat 32)

NTSC =/= NTFS
Answer #5
The blu-ray player recognises that a usb hard drive is connected, but when i press enter, nothing happens.
Answer #6
What file format is the drive? If it’s NTFS, try converting it to FAT32 and see if it’ll read it.
Answer #7
I had a 320GB WD Passport (USB 2.0) and that worked fine with the blu-ray player, but xbox says it needs to be formatted.
On the box it says ‘Formatted NTFS for Windows® XP, Windows Vista®, Windows 7’

Ahh You are using xbox right? for that to work You have to format your HDD to fat32.MKV does not work though!
Answer #9
Keep a separate small FAT32 partition on the drive for your Xbox needs. Move them over from the NTFS partition when you want to watch them.
Answer #10
Ok. I formatted the drive and converted it to FAT32 using swissknife, but still have the same problem. The blu ray player recognises a usb device is cobnnected but does not access it.

If you formatted it on fat32 it should work fine unless the movie you are trying to play is not supported by blu-ray player or xbox.
PS: I’m confused, Is it xbox 360 or blu-ray player? You said xbox requires the drive to be in fat32 and another time, you say it’s a blu-ray player. FYI, Xbox 360 does not have blu-ray player compatibility as of now
Answer #12
Put an .avi video file on it and see if that is recognized.
Answer #13
Yes, As ‘Nel’ suggested you could try .avi since it’s compatible with many players.
Some of the players don’t show the movie at all if the compatible format isn’t found or supported.
Try avi/mp4, it should work fine actually
Answer #14
its mainly for blu-ray player, but also want it to work on xbox.
the movie was in avi format. i copied it onto a usb pen drive and it worked but when i copied the avi to the wd passport and tried, it did not work.
also the avi was on the previous wd passport and worked fine. just this drive does not work with it. could it be the 3.0 lead?
thank you.

Try using a powered USB Hub as suggested here..

Are you sure you’ve done the format in the right way. Because the way I see it, Whether it’s USB or WD it’s still the same MASS Storage Device.
3.0 and 2.0 are the same and moreover if a device supports 3.0 it should be able to play 2.0 pretty well. (This is the reason even 2.0 USB ports on PC read 3.0 HDDS)
There should be something else because the way I see it your blu-ray drive does do the job!
Answer #19
I have tried Acronis True Image WD Edition. This is the one recommended on the WD website. I’ve followed everything on instruxctions on the website.
I have formatted the drive 100%, 50%, 10% and 32GB to FAT32, still have the same problem.
Does anyone else have a 3.0 WD Passport?
Answer #20
Does the drive work on other PCs and Laptops?
Answer #21
UPDATE:
The reason why it did not work was because i had a password on it. Had to enter it wrongly and format the drive. Luckily nothing important was lost.
Thank you for your help.
