Transfferring files wirlessly is really slow.

I got an edimax router (br-6204WG).
The signal quality is the highest (the router and my laptop is in the same room), but when I transfer files to other computer on my network I only get a transfer rate of 2mb per sec, while with a computer which is connected with a wire to the network I get much higher transfer speed.
What can be the problem??

theres no problem. Wireless is slower than Cable. When on wireless ure capped to 54Mbits – signal interferences; by cable u can get up to 1 Gbit/s depending on what kind of network card u got. Make sure ure close to the router. that might increace the speed a bit, but dont expect the same speeds u get on wired

Upgrade to Wireless N for faster speeds. (requires both a NIC upgrade and a router upgrade.)
Still not as fast as using gigabit NICs with a gigabit router and cable though.

as stated absolutely correct: there is no problem. with some specific wireless-g-hardware you may get up to 3,5 mb/s (from my experience), thats it! so your 2mb/s is absolutely the standard even if the router or ap is standing right next to you. go for gbit – not wireless-n nor 100mbit wired… my recommendation.

wireless N still isn’t as fast as wired. it’s “theoretically” faster than cable, but it’s slower in real life.

The rated bandwidth is very different to actual data throughput. Don’t confuse megabits (Mb) with megabytes (MB) per second, either.
802.11 G is rated at 54 Mbit but actual throughput after headroom and interferernce is closer to 25 Mbit.
25 Megabits = 3.12500 megabytes
You aren’t much below that and in the “normal” range.
Do you have a 2.4 GHz cordless phone in the house? They are the #1 cause of wireless network interference.

As others have said, that’s the way it is. Wireless is slow for big file transfers
