Surround sound connection to HDTV [solved]

SO basically i had my TV upgraded to HDMI the problem is i need to hook up my surround sound to it but i used the OLD red and white RCA so my HDTV has a optical digital audio out put. My surround sound only has one 3.5mm headphone jack connected to my computer and 1 red and white RCA. What cable do i use??

Please give us the connections available on your surround sound system because it’s not clear what is available. It does sound from what you wrote that it could be a simple speaker system with analogue audio inputs, usually 6 RCA or possibly 3 stereo jack connections. The Red and White RCA are probably stereo inputs. It could have an optical SPDIF digital input or Coaxial SPDIF digital input for Dolby/DTS decoding although that sounds unlikely.
You say that you TV has an optical SPDIF output and that would need to be connected to a audio receiver with a SPDIF digital input. Therefore you need something which can decode a bitstream or Dolby/DTS signal from the TV.
A PC could possibly do it if it has or can have a SPDIF input which are usually available as headers on motherboards. That means buying a suitable connector either optical or Coaxial to plug into the header. That would mean the PC decoding the digital audio SPDIF signal and then outputting via it’s analogue outputs to an analogue speaker system.
An Optical to Coaxial SPDIF converter can be used if necessary. They are quite cheap.

They look like a set of analogue speakers and have no decoder.
So you can’t do much with them as they are. You would need a SPDIF decoder and then plug the analogue outputs from that into those speakers.
Or, you might be able to rig it up via your PC and have that do the decoding. What audio does your PC have? Does it have a SPDIF coaxial or optical output on it? Does it have jack plugs for analogue speakers? Most onboard audio does, it’s often made by Realtek. If so, you might have a SPDIF header on your motherboard which you can purchase a SPDIF input bracket, either coaxial or optical. An optical type would be easier. Then connect the TV optical out to the PC and have the PC do the decoding for your Speakers. It doesn’t sound like you are making the most out of your speakers with your PC if you are only using PC stereo to the speakers. For true surround you would need to rig all that up properly.
So give some details about your PC audio, the outputs on the rear and the audio control panel software.
Doing it as suggested would mean having your PC on to do the audio decoding. Otherwise you need a different AV Receiver/Speaker system with SPDIF input, Dolby, DTS and all the new audio types such as Master Audio which are used by BluRay.

When I saw the Realtek 6 channel audio I thought great. Then I saw it was a Biostar mATX board. The good news is you should be able to hook up your speaker system to your PC for surround sound. However it looks like you will be needing a decent audio decoder for your TV.
You should hook the audio up to your PC so it’s not using the up mixing of the speaker system which isn’t giving proper surround sound. Use separate wires to your PC to do this. It will mean using three stereo jack cables.

i guess ill just use it for my PC instead and just buy a separate surround sound for my tv thanks man for the help

I have just had a look at the motherboard(mobo) manual, I didn’t have time earlier. Your mobo does have a SPDIF header but it is only for output, there is no SPDIF input, therefore you couldn’t use your PC to receive the TV audio. The bracket might come with the motherboard unless you purchased it pre-built. If you get a surround sound decoder you would be able to connect your PC to it if you wanted if you get the SPDIF bracket for your PC.
Take a look at the following link for some basic information on AV Receivers and what they can do. They become more important when Blu Ray is added.
