Does it play fine on your PC?

dude your living in the old age, all this issues with copying files from usb drive and connecting to ps3, all this video playback errors there is eaasy solution!
This software called TVersity can stream this video and audio wirelessly from your laptop. It can even download content from the Internet and stream it to the console. Even if your PS3 doesn’t support your multimedia files or Internet feeds, TVersity will convert them to a supported format and stream them to the console at the exact same time. In short, this allows you to use your PS3 as a much more powerful media center, bridging the gap between computer files on your Hard Drive, straight to your television through your PS3 console.

AVI is just a container, mate. It can hold video and audio streams encoded using a variety of codecs.
Use MediaInfo to identify which codec is used in both the files, on your PC. That will give an idea which kind of codecs and at what bit-rates they are supported on the PS3.

Answer #6
U can convert it into any other PS3 playable format and try it dude….
Answer #7
You’ll either have to re-encode it or re-download it, which ever is faster.
Answer #8
no, you dont have to download it again. I got the same issue with that movie and i worked out by re-encoding the movie, took me about 30 min. I’m too lazy looking up for the app again, you can google it. PM me if you still can’t find it
