[SOLVED]PC shuts down after a few minutes

January 26th, 2020

main everyday use always switched on rig is playing up…
It has….
asus p5kc motherboard
intel core2duo – 6750 @ 2.66g
trust 420 ps
2 x 1gig memory Seagate 250 gig hd
nvidia bfg 8600gt graphics
currently running win 7 pro
pc went to sleep overnight as usual
started to “rewake” this morning……..
then re-booted before full windows load up
then repeated several times
at one point it attempted startup repair
switched off and disconnected all cables for 30mins
put back together and booted normally to normal desktop with no error messages
I had transposed mouse and keyboard usb plugs so it downloaded new driver software sucsessfully
asked for licence acceptance and then started to install mouse correctly and then keyboard
crashed as above part way through keyboard
currently posting from gaming rig
so………..
am I correct it is a hardware problem?
i.e. memory
or more likely PSU?
any clever tricks or tests or suggestions please
Edit to add more system info

Answer #1
try to check power supply (if you have spear one) and memory..
Answer #2
managed to run it long enough to run win7 built in memory tester and hard disk checker
I know they are poor but the rig past both with flying colours
event viewer has not logged any software issues just unexpected shutdowns
looks like power supply issues????
any one know a test that doesn’t involve a paperclip???

First things first in cases like this check all connections and Hardware then try to remember when last shut-down was it OK if so then try and think what you did just before you put to sleep or switch off or what software, or driver you installed uninstalled etc etc check for loose Ram slots sticks that can cause non boot also also try one stick instead of two etc etc… Lots of reasons why just a case of elimination m8
Answer #4
try to swap memory on motherboard or just unplugged one memory from motherboard and then turn on pc.
to see how will system behave…if it does not work try to reinstall windows or scan for viruses.
Answer #5
Thanks for the help so far…………
to answer your points so far…….
PC is in a position (in a cupboard – with ventilation) where it has happily resided for 6 years….
no changes to actual rig or hardware at all in all that time, no chance of knocks etc
no software (other than win7 updates) changes for at least 6 months last Microsoft update is pending
virus software (AVG) last ran yesterday evening – no probs detected
happy to run memtest (if it will stay switched on long enough
only other thing of note is thinking back recently it doesn’t always wake up correctly – I believe that indicates PSU???????????
Answer #6
try pulling the 8600gt and clean the contacts with a clean pencil eraser and check that it’s fan is clean and spinning free
Answer #7
I notice from the very helpful (thanks everyone) list of tests and tasks suggested so far that no one feels that the PSU is at fault……
why???
Answer #8
OK pc has now been completely dusted, did not remove cooler or chip but did remove all dust from cooler fins
memory sticks swopped GPU cleaned contacts and fans
booted up into bios and activated hardware monitor
CPU ran at steady 27 centigrase for 2 minutes then hovered between 28 -30
at this point is shut down and rebooted twice at which point I shut down power and posted this message…..
what next chaps????
Answer #9
Yes I would suspect the PSU..
No simple way of testing it because if it’s faulty, it is of course, intermittent.
Substituting another PSU would be the way to go.
I recently had a faulty PSU that would cause unexpected shutdown..
Answer #10
PC of that age it may be a hardware problem, bad capacitor maybe
PSU seems to be the only component left to try
no one feels that the PSU is at fault...... No simple way of testing it because if it's faulty, it is of course, intermittent.
only way to test it is to replace it

This Pc was my previous gaming rig, built to a fairly high standard (at the time)
It was only brought into use as the “every day” “do all” pc about 18months ago……….
as an everday PC it stays switched on 24/7 as did its predecessor
thank you everyone for the input NOTE TO SELF – quality (i.e. expensive) PSU`s don’t always work out for the best
Answer #12
you replace the PSU & that fixed it ?
Answer #13
cannot afford it for the moment
it may have to wait a few weeks
I will let you all know
thanks everyone for the help

OK – update time…………..
Had a root up in my loft and found an old retired PC which had a really nasty 400watt PSU in it…………
after a lot of head scratching and cable searching (NEVER throw anything away!)
it was installed and successfully booted up!
Ran it for 3 hours plus……………
…………YES it needs a new PSU!
SOLVED!
