[SOLVED] Reformatting/Upgrading, Which OS To Use?

January 22nd, 2020

Sup, I’ve got an old PC that was shared with a housemate. We shared the admin account and things are still pretty clean but I can’t help but think of how much useless junk my housemate has left on the PC. Housemate has moved out finally and would like a clean PC.
I’ve decided to reformat, the question is which OS is recommended?
I’m currently running Win7 Ultimate, I plan on using this PC to install my backlog of Steam games and have this primarily as a gaming rig.
AMD FX8120.
nVidia GTX660Ti.
16GB Ram.
I’m soon upgrading to an i5 4670k and GTX780Ti.
Which OS should I run?
I was thinking SteamOS but I’m not really too sure if it’s worth it being in beta and I never liked the Steam UI anyway. Anyone here tried it or currently using it?
Then there’s Windows 8. I’ve read good things about it since the 8.1 update, have yet to try it, considering.
Of course there Windows 7 again. Should I just stick to Windows 7?
I’m also open to any other OS suggestions if there are better ones out there for gaming.
EDIT; I’ve decided to go with Windows 8.

Not tried Steam OS, but would recommend Windows 8.1, try it as is and if you don’t get on with it install Classic shell, Start 8 or StartIsBack and use it just like Windows 7.
Answer #2
Why not stick with Win7 ult edition 64bit, especially if you use your pc to game. You can read on Steam discussion how unstable win8 is for most games and most mods. Also if you hate Steam UI, you will HATE win8 UI as well. It’s not as accessible as win 7 (just watch some win8 introduction on youtube)
Answer #3
no touch screen = stay with W7 [ imho }

Win8 UI is irrelevant as I can overlook that with Classic Shell, more interested in performance though, I mainly play FPS, PlanetSide 2 (what I play most) is more stable on Win8 so I’ve read, especially with the 8.1 update, planning on getting BF4 for PC after upgrade, also read that there are some issues on Win7 whereas Win8 it runs smooth, and overall Win8 just runs more smoothly doing anything? And I did do a bit of reading, I have quite a library of Steam games, an honestly won’t get anywhere near playing through a quarter of my library. I did read up on the games I’m most interested in installing, some games had no posts regarding OS issues so I’m hoping Win8 is not a problem with them, some were reported to run great on Win8 and most of the ones that didn’t did have a solution to running smoothly, just requires a little bit of work.
I wonder if the positives outweigh the negative? I’m also kind of bored of Win7 honestly, a change would be refreshing.
Cheers.
Answer #5
Virtually all games I have installed have installed and run smoothly (Win 8.1), on a couple of occasions I have had to change compatibility mode (but that is to be expected with older games), so far nothing has caused any real issues.
Answer #6
You should really be using Windows 8. Everyone that tells you Windows 8 is bad, only says that because they don’t like the UI. It actually has a much better kernel, and is much more stable than previous versions.

If you want to avoid stress and wonton violence aimed at tech products, i suggest installing windows 7. Microsoft lied about reintroducing the start bar in windows 8.1 – they haven’t reintroduced it, they put something different yet again on it. Yes windows8 seems more stable, but there’s still no way of accessing all your install applications from a single start button.

After more researching/reading, the only real negative is people’s dislike of the metro ui and the lack of a start button (which I barely use in Win7, I create shortcuts for everything and organize the shortcuts in folders on desktop, anything used daily gets put on desktop), also some compatibility issues, both issues can be easily sorted.
I’ve decided to jump to Windows 8. Thanks for your thoughts guys.
