[SOLVED] How to open .key files

September 7th, 2013

Hey guys, I’ve never had this problem before, but I just reformatted my PC and installed all my programs/games again.
For some reason, when I’ve tried redownloading some programs that included registry keys in them (.key files). Unfortunately, Windows does not know what to associate these files with, and I’m sort of clueless (tried with regedit, but it says that’s only for binary registry script keys).
Please help, and thanks!

Answer #1
.key file normally goes in the installed software folder..You don’t need to open it..
Answer #2
LMAO! I’m so tired (haven’t slept yet), I mixed .key up with .reg… So sorry, and thanks so much lionden!
Answer #3
associate it with: regedit
Answer #4
you can find regedit in the %systemroot% folder
Answer #5
Some .key files are NOT regedit files – they can also just be a file called .key, a reg file for a program.
Open it in notepad, if it’s text then it’s reg file. If it’s binary it’ll be a registration file to go into the program folder.
Answer #6
key files are text files
open them with notepad
but as lionden says, no need to open them, or import them because – .key file normally goes in the installed software folder
Answer #7
