[RESOLVED] Building

August 5th, 2013

I have decided to buy a desktop and I’d like to see the opinion of the geniuses lurking this forum I won’t confine you since I can do my work perfectly with my current equipment. Feel free to improvise. the only restrictions are:
* Cost obviously, the cheaper it is the better; I won’t mind a “more than average” part here and there though.
* It will be used for design and a little gaming, so a good processor, screen (not really great, I don’t get tired easily) and GFX card are a must.
* Decent storage, will upgrade later if needed. I want good speeds though.
* I don’t need it to be “one for the future” build, but it is preferred.
* Maybe a good mouse (don’t bother yourselves too much with that).
* A mobo that will last PERIOD.
* Don’t bother yourselves with the budget initially (keeping the first req in mind obviously), I will make requests and /or adjustments later.
Thanks in advance to anyone who will peek at the thread.

There’s a few things you forgot to mention.
1. Which country your from.
2. You said you need a monitor too, But what size?
3. Any preferred Processor brand? Intel/AMD. Same question about the graphics card, Nvidia or AMD?
4. Details, Which design apps are you gonna be using? games?
Answer #2
1. Greece, I thought you knew that . That’s why I’m saying “don’t bother with the budget”. I can’t buy from a big vendor and will probably have to take some offers from a couple of friends that have small stores and / or order some parts.
2. I’d say between 22 and 30 inches.
3. Isn’t Intel significantly faster than AMD in the same price range? I keep hearing that, or is that a myth? GFX I don’t really mind.
4. Faaarr from hardcore gaming, think about hmmm ’07 games. I’d like to have all the heavy suites (Adobe, all 3d etc). It’s more of a hobby though, I don’t need a Quadro on the machine.

I didn’t, Or at least didn’t remember, It’s hard keeping track sometimes.
I can't buy from a big vendor and will probably have to take some offers from a couple of friends that have small stores and / or order some parts.
I found this one on google, Look pretty good:
http://www.e-shop.gr
I'd say between 22 and 30 inches.
I’d say 30″ would be an overkill, I got a 24″ WS and I find it big enough (And I’ve had 15/17/19/22 before)
Isn't Intel significantly faster than AMD in the same price range?
Yep, But I had to ask anyway as some ppl don’t follow logic and just stick to X brand.
I don't need a Quadro on the machine.
That’s all I needed to know
Anyways, I’m way too tired at the moment so I’m gonna get some sleep, I’ll make you a build tomorrow!

It’s one of my options. You can probably take an idea about prices there. I think it will be close.

You are probably right. I’ve used a 30″ with no problems but it was indeed kinda big. Let’s say 24-26″ then.

Thanks, take care.

Made you the following build, Didn’t include a monitor as the selection was very poor:
Case: Supercase LX-803 / 46.90
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.911329
PSU: CORSAIR GAMING SERIES GS500 500W / 79
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.549981
Mobo: ASUS P8Z68-V LE / 139.90
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.522935
CPU: Intel Core I5 2500K / 205
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.558331
Good for OC'ing.
CPU Cooler: ARCTIC COOLING FREEZER 13 PRO / 32.90
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.650159
MEM: 2X 4GB GSKILL DDR3 1333 / 45.8 (8GB total)
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.552236
GFX: Gigabyte Radeon HD 6570 1GB / 71.50
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.516448
Not top of the line obviously, But it'd do fine for your old games.
HDD: Samsung 2TB / 149
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.305452
Don't let the 5400RPM fool you, It's just as fast as a 7200RPM one.
ODD: LG GH24LS70 DVD Burner / 21
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.330682
Mouse: Logitech G500 / 69
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.570314
This is a high accuracy mouse which is idle for design apps/gaming.

It totals at 860 euros. Thoughts?

Well, my initial thought was to kiss you
I think you’ve nailed CPU (best value for money for my needs, it was also my top choice), PSU (love Corsair products) and mobo and that DVD drive and mouse are more than acceptable.
Cooler is also great and GFX card is acceptable.
Now to my “objections” / questions:
* Customers who bought the HDD comment below that is “strictly for storage”. 1TB is enough I think, wouldn’t a 7200 be better? Is there any near that price that could replace it. I don’t know much about the HDD market right now so I could use an alternative here.
* Isn’t the case a little overpriced? Sure it has 6 fans and it’s silent, yet…
* Which other GPU would you suggest as an alternative (up to double price).
Finally, my big objection has to do about RAM:
* Is GSkill credible? I’d like my chips from a different brand I think. Also, the mobo isn’t mentioned in the supported models, is it their fault? Are you sure that the set will work?
Thanks for your effort, it’s really appreciated.

Oh boy
Not gonna happen, Unless your a chick and you forgot to tell me about it that is!

There’s nothing wrong with using the particular HDD for the OS and it’s just as fast as a 7200RPM one, Just google for reviews if in doubt. I guess you could settle with a 1TB, But a 2TB would be better if you can afford it, Having the
extra space can be beneficial later on if/when you’ll need it.

Not at all! it’s fairly priced and it’s quite a bargain for what you get really.

GTX 560, But unless your gonna run the latest games, It’d be a waste of money.

Overruled!

GSkill is a very reputable brand,Just not very well known in Europe.
It doesn’t matter that the mobo is not on the supported models, It should work regardless. As long as the
RAM type matches with what the motherboard supports, It’s all good, They can’t be locked to specific motherboards.

Your comments were very helpful. I think I can build it with 700 ~ 750 euros which is excellent. I didn’t manage to create much better combos than this (actually, none at all) so the final config will be very close to this. I think I’ll put two 1TB HDDs though. I know GSkill, I was wondering about durability, that’s all, but I’ll trust you (trusting unknown people from thousand miles away is the essence of the internet anyway ). Thanks a lot
Answer #9
2 1TB HDDs would cost you double! and if you need it for backup purposes, Using a USB3 external
would be better suited for this task (it’d be in less of a risk for file corruption incase of a virus if your only
gonna hook it up once in a while for updating)
Anyways, Here’s another build to think about, Made it much cheaper:
Case: Supercase LX-803 / 46.90
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.911329
PSU: CORSAIR GAMING SERIES GS500 500W / 79
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.549981
Mobo: MSI P67A-C43 / 109
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.523277
CPU: Intel Core I3 2100 / 110.20
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.558337
CPU Cooler: ARCTIC COOLING FREEZER 13 PRO / 32.90
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.650159
MEM: 2X 4GB GSKILL DDR3 1333 / 45.8 (8GB total)
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.552236
GFX: Gigabyte Radeon HD 6570 1GB / 71.50
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.516448
Not top of the line obviously, But it'd do fine for your old games.
HDD: Samsung 1TB / 127.50
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.305457
ODD: LG GH24LS70 DVD Burner / 21
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.330682
Mouse: Logitech G500 / 69
http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.570314

Total: 712.8
Total (without the mouse): 643.8
Cheaper CPU/Motherboard/HDD (1TB instead of 2, But not much of a difference in price)
Answer #10
Thanks, the first setting was perfect, I don’t think I’ll go for an i3. I think I’ll order the first one and I’ll change the HDD. It’s really OK, I’ll keep my current screen (22″) and go for it. Idk what to say, I can’t even describe how grateful I am for this. I was really lost except for some basic parts. Your help was invaluable. I think I can safely tag it as “resolved”.
Answer #11
If you can avoid purchasing a harddrive until later this year, the prices might of lowered. ATM they are still very high. If you could use one you already have and wait, it would save you a lot. They are still about double the price that they were.
Answer #12
Thanks for the heads-up, will use it to achieve a better price.
