Piggy-Backing External Hard-drives
August 5th, 2016
They both have 1 x USB 2.0 outputs and,
They both also have 1 x 6 pin Firewire in and out i.e. Both hard-drives have 2 firewire ports.
The idea of this is that i am suppesed to be able to piggy-back the hard-drives with one of them connected to my laptop and the other one connected to the first one etc…
Firstly does anyone know how to set this up?
Secondly would i have to connect the “first” one to the firewire port on the laptop in order for this to work or would the USB work also?
P.S. I have the firewire driver installed on the laptop.
Why not just plug the HDDs into different USBs?

I only have 3 x USB ports and one is used with the printer, one with a HD and i like to keep the other one free for iPod etc…

Buy external USB Hub? There cheap and easy to get hold off.

USB & firewire are either or
so connect 1 via USB and the other via 1394
or get a USB hub and connect them to that
USB drives run in parallel not series
Answer #5
If you can’t figure it out USB Hubs are cheap, just look around. (I understand it’s not your first option).
Just did a search at newegg, found a 4 port usb hub for $7+S&h.

I’m not saying thats what u should buy, but they are really cheap

Hmmh i know what ye are saying but i mean if they can be piggy-backed (and they can) thats what im goin 2 do if i can figure it out. I dont need another thing stickin out of my laptop.
Would a USB port thingy not halve the speed?
Answer #7
it might if they are both transferring to the lappy @ the same time
but they should copy from 1 to the other or to the lappy @ full speed
Answer #8
If you buy a USB hub, make sure it says USB 2 compatible..
Anyhow try connecting them with firewire like you suggest and see what happens..
Maybe you need to run the firewire software to configure it…or google for support for your drives.
