I have found a 60GB SDD for £50,

But what’s the difference between that SSD and the £100+ 60GB SSD?

Most probably the read/write speeds are higher on the more expensive one, and it could also be SATA 3

I checked with the other ones and it has 6MB write speed and SATA 3

A few people I know who are waiting for the price of the larger capacity SSD’s to drop before they buy them have bought hybrid drives, Seagate MomentusXT about £85 for 500gb 2.5″.
Certainly not as fast as a true SSD, but better performance than a Velociraptor.

So Hybrid drives is under SSD but still good, and is there a 2TB SATA 3 HDD? If so is it faster than a 2TB SATA HDD?

yup, I have a couple of these Hitachi Deskstar drives, but they are 3.5 inch 5900 rpm used for storage.
Just posting as an example, I didn’t buy from here.

You will need a SATA 3 controller for it to work at SATA 3, although it is backwards compatible.

You wont need sata 3 anything for that drive. The sata 3 thing is just a marketing gimmick and will give you 0 speed boost.
It’s not even going to come anywhere close to sata 2 speeds so any extra bandwidth offered by sata 3 is not used.

I wouldn’t go near any Hitachi Deathstar drives because they are too unreliable, which they inherited from IBM. I had one fail after less than 18 months. I have a Seagate drive still working after 7 years and it’s used on a daily basis.
The latest OCZ SSD’s the v3 line have had lots of problems including BSOD’s for many people. I am not aware whether they have been fixed by firmware updates therefore be aware of it.

I was just saying that you can get SATA 3 2TB drives, as the OP asked, and that I had 2 of those. I don’t remember saying that they were the best SATA 3 drives. I just happen to use them because I got them extremely cheap and had 2 spare SATA 3 connections

lolz – I have some Seagate drives and they are fine too. I still have some Maxtor drives that have been going 10 years (obviously not continuously).

sata 3 has double the capacity of sata 2 but the hard drive mentioned does not even come close to filling the capacity of sata 2 so does not need any extra.

True for mechanical drives. Even most of the cheap SSD’s only perform at the upper limit of SATA II.
You can however get mechanical drives with a higher cache, say 64MB and a high platter density which makes an improvement.

Just look at the specs against whatever else you are looking at.
It is significantly faster than the 2tb drives you will find available at the moment.

Depends on the HDD.
Generally the caches vary from 32-64 MB and RPM varies 5400-7200
There are also some models beyond that, but these are the general specs on MOST drives.

Maybe you find it hard to understand so it’s a bit like this.
If you drive a car that can do a top speed of 30mph on a road where the speed limit is 40 miles per hour. (your car can only go upto 30 so you wont reach that right?)
then you drive the same 30mph car onto a road with a 50 mph speed limit. does that make your car faster?

Maybe you find it hard to understand so it's a bit like this.
If you drive a car that can do a top speed of 30mph on a road where the speed limit is 40 miles per hour. (your car can only go upto 30 so you wont reach that right?)
then you drive the same 30mph car onto a road with a 50 mph speed limit. does that make your car faster?

If you have a ssd that can go faster than the speed limit of sata 2 then sata 3 has a higher speed limit.,
speed limit on sata 2 is 280~ but the hard drives that spin (mechanical drives) the ones that you want to buy have a top speed of around 80-90.
Sata 3 had a speed limit of 560~ so if you have a drive with a top speed of 500 and put it on sata 2 it will be slower down to 280.
If it’s on sata 3 it can do its top speed.
these numbers are not ment to be accurate but you should get the idea.
Hard drives with a top speed 80-90 wont be any faster just because the cable can take 560.
