Password lock a USB Flash Drive?

August 1st, 2016

I just bought a new 32GB Corsair Flash Drive, and I’m looking to password-protect it from being seen from any unwanted eyes if someone were to get a hold of it.
How do I do it?

Answer #1
I`m sure you will find some thing usefull

I have been using this and works fine. It’s a bit of code that lock a folder, so I just have this one locked folder in the root of the flash drive

thankx buddy superb idea
Answer #4
If you are taking about the link I posted, I don’t use it anymore
You can see the password by opening the bat file in notepad, so it’s not very secure at all. Unless some IT illiterate steals your usb
Answer #5
Using Truecrypt would be best IMO:
http://www.truecrypt.org/
There are two ways to go about it:
1. Encrypt the FD entirely (on the sector level) – This would mean that you gotta have Truecrypt installed on any PCs your gonna be using it on. Do keep in mind that your not gonna be able to actually
access it til it’s mounted by TC to another drive letter, It’d also be at risk for accidental formats, If you (or another person) just clicks on the drive letter, Windows will prompt to format it (due to the unknown file system – Which is comprised of random data since it’s encrypted) 2. Create a container – Then you could include Truecrypt on the FD (It supports command line switches too, So you could make a batch file to mount the container more easily) but of course this would mean that if someone steals your FD, He’ll be able to connect the dots and figure out it’s encrypted, But he won’t be able to access your data (provided you used a solid password at least)
Either way – You should create a rescue disc after encrypting, And also, Keeping backup would be a good idea.

Stealthdisk is very similar to Truecrypt, you also don’t need to have it installed on each seperate pc as there is a mobile version that you have on the flash drive itself.
It’s quite an old app, and I don’t think it’s updated anymore, but you will probably find it around somewhere.
Hypertec make encrypted flash drives, I’ve got one lying around somewhere, always keep meaning to see if the software can be used on a different brand, will have a look when I get time.

The same can be done with Truecrypt, As already explained in option #2
Stealthdisk is very similar to Truecrypt
Hardly, It’s like comparing apples to oranges.
It's quite an old app
Very old actually (2005) and I don’t see any good reason to use it.

Have you ever tried Stealthdisk ?

It's quite an old app
Very old actually (2005) and I don't see any good reason to use it.

Why, it does exactly the same thing ?
I was just offering an alternate solution. Oh well – I bow to your expert knowledge on everything you post…
Oh yes, this coming from someone who thinks the largest HDD’s are 1TB for a 2.5″ and 3TB for a 3.5″ HDD only a couple of months back.

@ – I’ll have a play about with that Hypertec software later today or tomorrow.

No, But it’s plain to see that it doesn’t contain the same feature set, And if you think otherwise, You clearly haven’t used TC for ages or maybe not at all.
Why, it does exactly the same thing ?
Similar, But not the exact same and I wouldn’t recommend such an outdated app
to anyone for 2 simple reasons:
1. As long as the development keeps going, The bug level is kept to a minimum. It may contain bugs neither of us knows of and since the development has stopped, That’s just the way it’s gonna stay.
2. This software is Pre-Vista! Who knows how stable it’d run on Vista/Win7 (if at all) and neither of us know which OS it’s gonna
be used with (tho odds are that if the FD will be used on multiple PCs, At least some of em are bound to run Win7) Oh yes, this coming from someone who thinks the largest HDD's are 1TB for a 2.5" and 3TB for a 3.5" HDD only a couple of months back.
This was true at the time I posted it, Set that aside, It’s completely irrelevant to this topic.
You really should stop with your childish antics, You had no reason to attack me on the personal level.
I had issues with the app you mentioned and not you personally. Grow up!
Edit: Seems this topic was originally started back in April and was recently bumped by another user () too bad I didn’t noticed it sooner, Could’ve save me a lot of typing

Well you haven’t tried Stealthdisk, how can you state it’s any worse than TC. Yes I have tried TC, but have always used Stealthdisk, so what’s the point in me changing ? I do usually recommend TC to people, as it’s FREE and easier to find – but as mentioned was only offering an alternative. It runs fine on Win 7.

It wasn’t true at the time of posting – WD had their 2TB 2.5″ HDD out for at least 6 months at the time of your post, and Hitachi had 4TB 3.5″ HDD’s out for at least 4 months before that post (at the time that was how long I had two of them).
I am not sure about being childish, I was merely pointing out that you always have a condecending attitude to posters here, thinking you know everything, when clearly you don’t. It wasn’t a personal attack – I was merely pointing out that often you don’t know what you are talking about, and you try to convince people that you are correct when everyone else is wrong
You have even posted that I am “jealous of your knowledge”… lmfao.
eg. Since when has RAID 1 had better read performance than RAID 0 ?
http://www.google.com?p=62788826#62788826
Basically, Both types involve using 2 identical HDDs and increases the read/write performance (RAID1 provides better read performance tho) ....
It is preferable to have identical drives in RAID, but not actually a necessity
*EDIT – People are always often asking this question about locking flash drives, so no harm in it being bumped from only a couple of months back IMHO.

I’ve been busy all week, But now that I’ve got the time, I’m certainly not gonna let you have the last word.
Well you haven't tried Stealthdisk, how can you state it's any worse than TC
I’m a long time TC user, And I looked on Stealthdisk’s feature list and screenshots – It just doesn’t compare.

It wasn't true at the time of posting - WD had their 2TB 2.5" HDD out for at least 6 months at the time of your post, and Hitachi had 4TB 3.5" HDD's out for at least 4 months before that post (at the time that was how long I had two of them).

That’s not very true either. My post was made on April 4th and WD released their 2TB 2.5″ HDD only 15 days before that (on March 20)
http://www.wdc.com/en/company/pressroom/releases/?release=c3a9ddd6-7437-4ae6-bc33-b7c7c2d50904
Oh, And those Hitachi’s were released only 1 day before my post (April 3rd):
http://www.hgst.com/press-room/2012/hgst-ships-the-worlds-first-4tb-enterprise-hard-drive
It’s beyond me why you’d lie about having those 2 4TB HDDs for 4 months prior to my post.
You just can’t argue with those dates. So yes, In the end I was wrong, But purely because they
were new and availability was low, I look in online PC shops all the time (As I build PCs for other people quite often) and I don’t recall seeing those HDDs anywhere at the time. Set that aside, You were wrong too^. See, Everybody make mistakes from time to time!
eg. Since when has RAID 1 had better read performance than RAID 0 ?
Since long time ago, But it’s not always the case, It depends on the controller.
It is preferable to have identical drives in RAID, but not actually a necessity
I’m well aware of that, Didn’t mention it on purpose as it’s best to have identical ones for best performance.
I am not sure about being childish, I was merely pointing out that you always have a condecending attitude to posters here, thinking you know everything, when clearly you don't. It wasn't a personal attack
That is nonsense, You certainly are childish. Let’s face it, The only reason you mentioned some of my old posts (which again, have no relevancy to this topic) is because you wanted to make me look bad
as some kind of “revenge” because you didn’t like what I had to say. Just because someone disagrees with you on something it doesn’t mean you should go all out and let him have it on the personal level, That is certainly not the mature thing to do. As far as the rest goes, I’m always respectful towards other posters (even when they don’t return the favor) and I never claimed to know everything (nobody does) but I do know a lot of stuff and I like sharing my knowledge with others.
Answer #12
^^^ I can’t be bothered quoting all the post – the Hitachi 4TB HDD’s you are referring to are the “Enterprise” version – there were previous versions started shipping in November 2011 – I’ll dig out the receipts and post them here if you want ?
You may look at on-line stores to build pc’s for people or whatever, I happen to get most of my stuff trade, so they stock things well before the “middle men” that you buy from do. Also, the WD 2TB drives were released in Hong Kong/China well before the rest of the world. You read too much wikipedo.
BS, Your just jealous of my knowledge.
I cba saying any more – everyone knows what you are like here. FYI I do respect you helping people, just you act like a cyber bully at times, and I stand by my previous post.
Answer #13
just to jump in on the SD vs. TC. Though TC is well known in the industry, my security lecturer at university (who is an active forensic guy on the side) claimed there is a belief in parts of the security industry that TC may have backdoor technology implemented. Now this may not be a big issue for an average guy wanting to protect his privacy but it sets a nasty precedent, as seen with things like Flame being made public. It may be worth using lesser known technology for security via obscurity.
Personally I’d probably use TC as I’m not a massive terrorist, and securing something from 99.9% of people is enough for me. Also, it’s familiar software. Try them both.
