Linux Videos

August 17th, 2013

I’m using Linux Mint 12 64 bits, and i’m having issues with videos. They get a bit slow when watching them. I already installed the Graphic Drivers but that wasn’t much of a help. I’ve been desperately looking for a fix but haven’t found it yet, hope you guys can help me out on this. Thanks.
Answer #1
on any videos? or more likely on HD videos?
Answer #2
More information required.
Video format ?
Video size?
App used for video playback ?
Desktop ?
Have you tried another video of same format for comparison ?
Answer #3
No matter what video I try, it’s still slow, but I found the issue. GNOME was causing it, using MATE solved the problem…just wondering if there is a solution for GNOME.

A quick fix for gnome is to use the 2D platform, all you have to do is change your login settings.
I don’t use the new gnome 3, it slows my work flow, also the mate desktop from phoronix tells us it is not maintained properly.
Did you do a fresh install or upgrade? I only use fresh installs due to upgrade issues. Issues can arise from customized settings not standard defaults.
If you did a fresh install then you should negate this issue unless your using somewhat old hardware. I have installed linuxmint 12 on older systems with no issues. (using default graphics driver)
Have you installed the proprietary graphics driver?
Can your system run virtualbox? If so i use mine from external HD (hard drive), i test distros this way, standard to encrypted installs.
Give opensuse 21.1 or debian 6.0.4 a try.
Hope this helps.
