just convert a AVI to MKV or any other precise procedure ?

August 1st, 2016

hi,
I am a bit confused, should I convert the AVI to MKV with some tool ( handbrake ? ) or there is another longer and more precise process for this ( similar to ripping ? but from an AVI than a DVD disc )
I don’t want to lose quality and reduce the file size from 700 MBs to 350 MB or 400 MAX
please recommend:
1. process to use
2. application to use
3. settings like codecs, or output settings to use ( I would like these movies to run on HD screens too and on 1600×900 LED monitors too )
Thanks.

Try freemake video converter its has all the options you mentioned and more and an easy user interface, you shouldn’t see any difference in quality.

handbrake or megui.

I tried handbrake with default settings and it converted the AVI of 700 MB to 900 MB of MKV can you recommend me the settings to be used ?

I can’t give you any setting recommendations, but i use version 0.9.5 of handbrake and it lets you choose size of file that you want. Newer version only lets you choose bitrate. You can of course calculate what size file a particular bitrate results in, but i find it much easier just choosing size.
