DSL Modem/Router Help- Changing Speeds!
I have windstream service as its the only service in my area, its DSL. using a “F@st 1704N / 2704N” Modem.
The service is unfortunately terrible, and the modem seems to be trash. However, it randomly gets slow, or disconnects (normally once a day, in the morning) It often takes minutes to a hour to fix. (constantly rebooting until it fixes itself)
BUT, we have 3072kbps setup on the modem, after a unexpected, or expected reboot. MOST of the time the speeds will change… even going as low as 300kbps!. Running speed tests also show the same results! Upload speed will change also but normally wont go below 450kbps (500-550kbps by default)
I had a tech come out and I explained the issue in detail, but after rebooting it twice. It didnt seem to happen for him but the next day, its happening again!
Any solutions or questions?

To start with you have to run whats called a traceroute when the speeds get slow.. Heres a howto guide.. That may show you where the problem is occurring in the network to what ever website.. http://www.mediacollege.com/internet/troubleshooter/traceroute.html
From there it can give you an idea where the speed slows down.. Google and read about it, hopefully you can make sense of it, or ask further here.. FYI it pretty much shows your personal address so you may not wanna post it here?
Edit: thats to do with the speed of it, it can be a number of problems with the router dropping out each morning.. Not going to try and comment on the dropouts.. (Actually I will, I had a similar problem, pretty much the same.. The problem was a fault in the line between home and the box the router connects to.. Had to get the ISP to run tests and eventually fix the connection, how ever they do it, but may not be the same problem..)

The speeds ARENT slowing down. the settings in the modem itself are changing.

Well with the second comment I made, I had a connection which would normally drop out once a day at a certain time. Had to give the service guy my number and have him pop in when the fault happened. He error checked by making sure the router wouldnt connect. Then jacked in from out side and tried to connect with a terminal. When that wouldnt work, I was told it was a fault in the line, and there was nothing I could do about it and had to sit back till they fixed it. Myself I would try another router and see if the same thing happened. If it does, the problem Ive described is probably the cause of your probs, and you will need the ISP to fix it.. Maybe also try google the brand of your router + speed change and see if you can find other occurrences of the problem happening to others..??

I tried googling it, also tried a brand new modem/router they gave me when they came by. they said they fixed some signal issues becuase we are 16k+ feet from the DSLAM with surprisely fast enough speeds. however the speeds change weirdly, they could not find any issue with it so I doubt i’ll end up with a solution to this unless I bother the ISP for weeks on end until they can end up finding something. also chances are it’ll be the same guy coming up and doing the same things.
