There are no special drivers for USB/Storage Devices! At least not from Win2K upwards! Windows has universal ones for those.
Provide a screenshot from device manager.

This, try searching for Intel Chipset Utility. Is it a new system/fresh install or have you been facing this problem only recently ? If you have desktop then you should download CPU-Z and then run it to know what your motherboard model is. Google to see any BIOS updates have been released. If you have a laptop then go to their driver site and download it from there. Perhaps that might work

Thank you all posters.. it seems it more serious than I thought I have both Microsoft and Western digital looking into this issue..the original inf and sys files are reported to be corrupt and all attempts at updating say the best drivers etc are already installed..even if I remove and shut down

I need to thank all who responded..in the end I got an ISO of Win 7 and installed but chose the upgraded..seems choosing this function of the install program will restore all the old/new system files without damaging the registry or program. So after several hours and over 2300 various updates I am finally back to where I was..amazing eh..
Answer #17
So are your USB’s working now?
Answer #18
well they were until I looked in Device manager and saw that ESET personal Miniports were yellowed out..another issue I guess
