think my hdd died

August 4th, 2016

hi all i think my slave hdd died on me just stoped showing up in my computer tested it on 2 pc’s so far neither detected it is there anyway i can get the stuff off it i dont want 2 lose a terabyte worth of data
Answer #1
When you put the HDD into the other PCs, did you enable it under disc management? Otherwise it won’t detect it.
Answer #2
set partitions aside, does the bios detect it? cuz if not it means the hd have an electrical problem
and in that case no app will help you,you will have 2 options
1) pay for professional data recovery, which btw to the best of my knowledge costs at least 500 USD
2) get the exact same hd (firmware included)
and with date of manufacture as close as possible
then replace its pcb board, more info here http://deadharddrive.com/
theres also this UK company that sells hd pcb boards
for these situations, they ship internationally i think
http://www.ultratec.co.uk/
this method is cheaper but no guarntees it will work

thats not it , from what he said its defintly an hd that already had partitions/data and not a new one so i dont think it got anythin
to do with disk management, windows should have detected the partitons
if it was in healthy condition

hi i just unpluged the master and pluged this 1 in its place then tried 2 install windows on it came up no drives btw it still vibrates and stuff like its working
Answer #4
well if it is dead, you can try the freezer trick. It may work it might not. Just put the HDD in an Antistatic bag, freeze if for about 5-10hours then put it in the pc cold. It may work giving you the time to copy some or most the stuff off it before it dies.
Answer #5
correct its not new it was my slave drive almost fully loaded bois dont detect it now its bs the thing is like 2 months old
Answer #6
never heard that 1 ill call the pc shop 2morrow if they cant help ill try the freezer

CHECK if its detected in the bios,is it an SATA
or IDE one?

as far as i know that trick is only useful for an HD with crashed heads
that makes clicking sounds
EDIT: just read the bios doesnt recognize it,go with one of the options
in my 1st reply then

Should still be under warranty if its only 2 months old… Take it back, and don’t put it in the freezer if its still under warranty.
I’ve tried that one before though, it does work.
Answer #9
Finally, a lot of smart answers in one page. If you are able to see the HD……..immediately start moving data to another drive. Then see if you have a warranty, I do for one year in all five of my “Western Digital HDs” and you have to buy another….? Go “Western Digital Caviar”.

the warranty isnt really the issue i believe,he just want his data back
from what i can see , the freezer trick does work in certain cases
but only with hds that make clicking sounds which is not the case here
never heard that 1 ill call the pc shop 2morrow if they cant help ill try the freezer
computer stores dont do pro data recovery as far as i know
that requires clean rooms and alot of expertise which only
a data recovery lab can provide , from reasons already specified
the freezer trick will not help you

He still needs to take it back to claim the warranty on the HDD mate… As for your last reply, you still do need to enable HDD’s under disc management before they work, otherwise it will look like this:

im not saying he doesnt but data recovery is the #1 priority at the moment
btw theres quite a few data recovery companies that have
contracts with hd companies so if they open em up
it doesnt void the warranty , you are confused , when the hd
is new it comes without any partitions then it looks like in the image
above but when it already have partitions/data windows
will recognize em automatically with no user-interaction whatsoever

Can you tell us which brand do you do and how long do you buy it cuz I think large storage Hard Drive don’t last long.

i completly disagree, first of theres no bulletproof hd company, theres failures
in all of em and theres a number of factors affecting reliability
such as the heat level (some get really hot
and require proper cooling) and the number of platters
(some have less then others) and the PSU of course that might send a spike of too much
voltage one day if its a real bad one,not to mention static electricity
if your not being careful , large hds can defintly last long all in all its a matter of luck

But most of the hard drive die is large size (slave) and not the main one.
I know there are many factors but I just ask for the brand for reference.
Answer #16
lets be honest , you cant really know for a fact that most HDs that go
bad are in very big size after all you dont have any statistics
to back that up , just FYI i have a 500gb for over a year and its still
goin strong

So, which brand do you use?
I know that large size HD may overheat easily and the PSU may count too.
Answer #18
WD,its a 500gb se16 sata2 aaks drive
and just for the record i use proper cooling for it
yes large hds get hotter ,of course some
more then others however with proper cooling
or a well cooled case its not really an issue

HD dying has got nothing to with size, brand, manufacturer…Any HD can die anytime…And you can buy 2 identical HDs..One can die anytime and the other can last for a long time…
